Yes, the Japanese military situation was hopeless. But the civilian one was not.
What most people fail to realise is that Japanese citizens wouldn't have surrendered, even if the
Emperor did. An Allied invasion of Japan (what would have been necessary for a surrender) would have
cost over a million American lives, and many more from the remaining nations that would have been
involved. Prior to the supposed invasion of Japan in 1945, American factories crammed out over a
million Purple Hearts, which are given to dead soldiers. With the bombing, America has instead been
able to use these Purple Hearts for wars since then. In fact, I believe they are still using those
manufactured all those years ago.
I'm not saying that bombing two cities with a nuclear device was good. But it saved more lives
bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki that would have been lost in an Allied invasion. |
