You Should Never Hang Up The 'phone When You Get An Unsolicited Sales Call.
Never just hang up. Draw it out, have some fun with them, leave them hanging on, lead them into thinking they have a sale, and then terminate the call. It is their money, if we all wasted their time as much as possible maybe then these calls would become uneconomical and companies would stop making them.

I make an effort to talk them into committing suicide, or at least, breaking down in tears. I make them want to hang up the phone, or even better, make them apologize and never want to call me again. For example: If a saleswhore tries to sell exercise equipment, lie and say you're a paraplegic. It's a lie, but the guilt you can make the jerks feel will get them to take your name off their lists.

Why is it if you put up a sign on your door, saying, "no salesmen or religious morons welcome," you can defend your house against such trespassers (including using pepper spray), yet people think a person should be polite to a telemarketing saleswhore? Telewhores are not deserving of civility anymore than is a door-whoring imbecile.

It's such a shame, my Granny gets these calls all the time and she keeps forgetting to hang up on them!

My plan was to pretend to talk as if I left the phone on answering. Or try and sell something back to them. I mean it brightens up their day a bit...!

All for it.

I have done that. I tried to sell them stuff. Or when it's a charity i tell them that i am out and really need some money, or else i cannot pay my mortgage, that tends to stop them.

I tell them I'm really interested, but can't talk now. I tell them to give me their # at home so I can call them back during dinner and talk about it.

When I first glanced at the debate's title, my blood pressure went up and I got a wee bit frustrated with Balders, thinking that perhaps he stood at the helm of some sort of human rights activist organization, which protests the uncharitable treatment that call centre representatives receive when they ring us at dinner time. When I read on, however, I realized that this is a very wise idea indeed. If we would all just spend an extra five minutes per day giving call centre representatives headaches and making their employers miserable, perhaps economic considerations would make them realize how repulsive their activities truly are.

I get a call every single night, without fail, and in most cases "John" at the other end of the line in India, is trying to get me to sign up for a new credit card or a mobile phone plan. I understand that these representatives are working for peanuts, but they are not hapless victims, they surely realize how annoying and intrusive their activities are and as such, there is no reason for us to be pleasant with these people who consciously harass others.

I can usually tell when I am about to get harassed by a call centre agent, since my phone rings differently whenever I get an international call and there is usually a two to three second period of silence right after I pick up when I am being contacted by these abusive companies. Usually, I hang up before the annoying representative has a chance to say "How are you today, Mac." I will, however, follow Balders' lead in the hope that his wise approach will turn into an international movement, and the iron fist of people all over the western world will eventually drive these centres out of business.

I have so much fun with them and actually plot out different things to try. Sad I know but good for a giggle none the less, its really fun to put them on hold for 5 minutes or so and then come back and ask 50 thousand questions that don't really have anything to do with what they are attempting to sell. Put them on hold again and then demand to know if they want to buy the product they are selling or not. Turn it around on them, a lot will start to stammer and hang up on you. After doing this for a while the majority of the calls have stopped.

Absolutely
we got a house phone about a year ago
we didn't have one before but we needed one to keep in contact with my younger brother who just joined the army
and all we got were salesmen ringing up
every day
every couple of hours
and they STILL RING after about a year
my advice: DONT GET VIRGIN PHONE DEALS
we generally either don't pick up the phone when its inches in front of us
or we answer it and tell them the homeowner died
or keep em off the hook as stbalders said
:)
they are neveer recorded messages so...

Yesterday I got one. Most people would say "no thank you" and terminate the call. That way the salesrep would try someone else. They could keep bashing away until they struck upon a victim. What I do is toy with them. Yesterdays one said "hello can I speak to StBalders?" I said "yes, I will just get him for you" and left the phone on the side for 5 mins. They were still there when I picked up again, listened to their waffle then said "Yes I am interested, just hold on". 5 mins later they were still there. I then said "sorry, Pingu is on TV, gotta go" and hung up. If we all do this they will stop making these annoying calls.

Join with me.

It doesn't do any good, it doesn't hurt the company that is paying these people, it only hurts the employee who, in most cases, only gets paid if they make sales. You keeping them on the phone is useless, most of them work in massive call centers that have dozens or hundreds of others that are still dialing.

Besides, don't you have a life? I don't know about you, but my time is valuable and hanging out on the phone pissing off telemarketers is a poor use of my time.

Your day can't be that jam packed Cephus or else you wouldn't be on here so frequently. Besides all you have to do is leave the phone off the hook and carry on about your business.

I know just me and a couple of others doing it wouldn't make much difference but if everyone followed suit it would cripple them. If every time they phoned someone who wasn't interested they wasted 5 minutes instead of 5 seconds the industry would die. As for the employees.....balls to them.

Half the time (actually a lot more) they are recorded messages. I get two everyday from the same place. When i call them and tell them to stop, the person in India hangs up on me!

I also spent a lot of time doing telephone work years ago. It was an awful job, and i was just trying to make a buck while in school. I understand that if they waste resources they may find it to be a bad return on their investment, and hanging up helps them with that investment - makes sense, but i generally don't have the time, and hate being on the telephone.

My idea doesn't seem to catching on. I know it would work though if we all did it.

The recorded messages are the most annoying but they seem to have dried up of late.

The companies will never stop, because there's always that bored housewife or older couple who will buy into it.

And it's a bit of a waste of time to keep them talking for ages.

Come on Snipex, the longer we keep them hanging on the less chance they will have to pray on that old lady. Just string them along and leave them on hold for a while. It can be good fun too if you don't have much on at the time.

Try it next one you get. You know it makes sense.
