You Have Got To Give Up On God, If You Want To Improve Humanity.
Lets face it, God has had 2000 years, and we are still living in a mess. I bet human beings, not politicians, could set the world to rights in about the term of office a democracy allows. If we could get rid of hope. Get rid of that heaven nonsense.

The most progressive societies in all of human history have been, without exception, secular societies where no particular ideology held sway. There was total religious, political and personal freedom.

But religions tended to die out naturally in such societies because people ceased to see a need for it. However, it didn't make the societies any less progressive nor did it change their attitudes towards other people.

You know what you friggen religious idiots are so blind, has there ever been a description of god, did you know that we can disprove your almighty bible by just saying that the new testament is made up full of stories from past bibles and since the old testament is gone how can you really be sure of anything, there is not just one bible, there have been hundreds along the way of mankind, now do you have anything to say as an argument

I am not actually blaming "God" here, more mans blind faith in him.
Faith allows excuses for everything, instead of forcing mankind to look at the problems within it. Facing up to reality.
Imagine there's no heaven.
It's a comfort blanket, and a dangerous one. If you allowed a child to carry it's comfort blanket into adulthood, we would have a lot of childish adults.
God allows you to turn a blind eye to reality. Prevents men from growing into anything other than children.
Religion totally confuses me. It teaches us, or at least should, to be better human beings. But it doesn't work that way for everbody. It makes some worse. Self righteous and blinkered.
I'm just popping a debate out here.
Possibly Athiests have a firmer grip on the real problems of this world than the religious do.

Childish adults. You sure that would be a bad thing?

You keep saying god without defining this god you speak of. You should be saying theism.

Asking you to describe reality is pointless. But go ahead. The reality which you will present is unreasonable. The only reason you will provide is the continuation of a species of individuals who all die. Big deal. And I don't have to believe in any god to come up with the big deal theory.

Humans find all kinds of things to turn a blind eye to all kinds of things.

Again, I'm not sure children would kill as quickly as grown men but I'll leave that for you to research.

Religion totally confuses you. If I was you, I would try and get a grip of that before making conclusions about religion. It's kind of silly.

Then you say that religion should teach us to be better human beings. This would suggest that the belief in god, taught properly would improve humanity. You may be right. Then you say it doesn't work for everybody that way. This would suggest it does for some. I would agree. This would be the case with most things.

The self-righteous and blinkered. These are common traits and don't have to be associated with gods or religion. Given the history of humans, these traits will manifest themselves through any convenient source.

It's probable that some atheists have a firmer grip on the real problems (whatever those are - currently one of the major problems is the world economy) same as some theists have a firmer grip. In the case of the world economy, it would probably depend on individuals who know the FREAKING economy better than others.

Man has been trying for 6000 years to make this world perfect. God has not been trying to do that. Therefore, i have no faith in our ability to do it alone.

Man has been trying for millions of years to better his own minute on this planet. Capitalism is built around that ideal. There has never been a drive from within democracy to make this world perfect. It is always a drive to win the next election, the next round, the next bout.

God gave us free will so we could choose to love and be in relationship with Him. He would get no satisfaction from robots which is what we would be if we had no free will. All this mess on earth is from our using our free will the wrong way. Don't blame God. He doesn't want this, but he won't violate our free will because he is seeking our company and relationship. He loves us, he keeps on loving us in spite of it all. When are we going to wake up, soften our hearts and love Him and each other back.

You need to improve yourself if you want to improve,
So just start with you, say how you are so good and maybe we will follow or disagree;-))
Start with I am and take it from there. O.K.

Yeah politicians are human being and those supposed human being who can save the world for all your problem will probably make the same choices the politicians made in the first place because of nature of sin

So if we stop believing in God our problems will all go away? I think more problems would arise as a result. Lets say everyone believes in this life and this life alone. Do you think people will be as laid back? I personally think people would become more selfish and think moreso in their own self interest. If I am going to die and this is the only existince I have I will party all day everyday. If I tell you you can ONLY watch TV on July 27, what will you be doing during that time frame? You will be TVing it up. Now imagine if I told you you were only going to LIVE for 80 years? You would most likely be living it up.

Look I don’t particularly believe in god. So for the sake of argument let’s assume I’m right for a moment. That means it can’t be gods fault since there is no god and the problems with religion are problems with people. Or put another way it was Abrahams fault for being willing to kill his own child to appease the voices in his head and his followers fault for accepting the leadership of an insane person.
On the other hand let us assume there is a god. Do you really believe that an all powerful being would need us to persecute non believers if that was really the goal, or is that more likely to be us failing to resist our own worst instincts and using god as an excuse. Either way this is not god’s mess but our own.

It's not belief in God which is the problem with religion, it's people who try to force their beliefs onto others whether it be through warfare, legislation, mandatory classes, whatever. In the purest sense the vast majority of religious beliefs boil down to being good to each other - and who could argue with that? But I share your skepticism or anger with the hyper-religious who breathe deep the crazy fumes of zealotry and want to punish those who don't join them.

I saw "Religulous" - the pseudo-documentary pointing out the folly in many world religions and their leaders. Good movie. At the end they say all religion needs to be abandoned before we blow ourselves up. I still disagree. We need to embrace the good which comes from religion and speak out against the more extremists. Ultimately it's the masses of people who really hold the power in any church no matter what a handful of holy rollers at the top think.

I'm a firm atheist but there is such a thing as freedom of religion and freedom to express it. It maybe nonsence to you and me but people believe it and that is there right to believe in god.
But if there was a divine invisible being in the sky looking down on us it would be people that are making the mess. If there was any truth in the the belief then one must believe that we have free will, no interference from this being so therefore it would be people who are making the mess not him.
But from my purely atheist point of view there is no God there so blaming him is completely pointless and people should take responisibilities for their own actions.

You gotta get rid of the hate, and keep the love.

And hell as long as it's love, it can be as tough as it wants.
Just BEZ and get along with people, work with 'em because you never know what they have to offer, or can offer.

You ain't gotta like 'em, but respect them.

Huh? I don't mean to be...well, mean here, but what the heck does that have to do with the question here? I believe in God. I am on the same side here, but the get rid of the hate and keep the love stuff sounds like some tree hugging liberal way of thinking. People are solely responsible for messing up and God did nothing to help that along. Again, He gave us free will. I try to get along with most people, but I have to say that I am sick of anyone who passes blame around to anyone. Too many people...I would venture to say all people...need to self reflect and cast blame with themselves in most things. Once one has achieved perfection, they can then go around blaming any other thing they want. Since perfection cannot be achieved without being Christ, we all need to worry about what we do and not what others do. We also can't blame God because we are not able to live by the commands he gave us. There aren't that many of them. Perhaps working on those will help people. In the meantime, I personally can't respect ignorant people who need to validate their opinions with no basis in reality or fact.

I don’t believe a god has anything to do with the problems in this world, or the solutions to them. So, naturally, I would disagree with this debate.

Short and sweet. You have the right idea. I agree with you 100%. Not sure why anyone would blame God for the world's issues anyway, but then again, I see too many people on here blaming everything they can on anything that causes them to avoid looking in the mirror and working toward the changes they want, but are afraid to go after.

First of all, you do need to improve your writing skills so that people can "get" what you are trying to say without re-reading your argument several times. Secondly, God has nothing to do with the way we, as human beings, have messed up the country/world. If you could expand your mind for just a moment, you would realize that we were created and given FREE will. If we choose to make the wrong decisions, we suffer the consequences. God does not make our choices for us. If any politician, who is a human being...not sure what you were saying with that part of your statement...could "fix" our country in one term, it would be nothing short of an act of God. One of the fundamental problems in our society is a lack of faith in a higher power. Most people are driven by greed and selfish motives to further their own agenda.

This country was founded on religious freedom because of a deep faith in God. Is it a coincidence that we have been blessed to be a superpower? We have many problems, that is true, but we are a strong nation. That will not go on forever. If we continue to take God out of everything in this country, we will become a weak nation. People need a moral code of ethics to follow. If you and others want to believe there is no God, I am not here to convince you otherwise. I am simply saying that belief in God or other omnipotent and loving creator is not to blame for any issue affecting our country. It is ignorant people who have damaged society. If you prefer to live in a society not founded out of a love of God, perhaps you should find yourself a different country and take up residence there. I would suggest that you make an effort to make better use of their language than you have or ours though. Study, increase your vocabulary, take an English course and maybe you can state your opinion in a way that has a shred of influence on others.

PS. God has had 2,000 years and many miracles have been witnessed all over the world. We have had less than 2,000 years and we have managed to make a mess out of the planet and make a mockery of all that is good and sacred.
