| Without A Left Wing In Britain People Will Be Pushed To More And More Radical Right Wing Alternatives As The Main Parties Lose Credibility. |
| It is fairly obvious for anyone to see that Britain doesn't really have a left wing. People have no idea what the liberal democrats stand for unfortunately and the Tory opposition doesn't have the solution to our current problems. During times of crisis people turn to radical alternatives such as the BNP, there is no left wing any more leaving the country open to dangerous radical elements like the British Nazi (sorry meant Numpties, no sorry "National") Party. Like it happened in 1930s Germany and Bolshevik Russia. |

While I see your logic, and appreciate your fears history would perhaps (and I say perhaps) suggest
otherwise. Let's look at the last 2 times that one party has been incredibly weak.
Most recently was 2001. The Tories were still not a credible opposition, and Labour had just been
resoundingly and for a second time given a mandate at the polls. While Labour did start a series of
large public spending rises, they hardly swung to the communist side, and the 'New Labour' wing
remained dominant over the 'Old Labour' part.
Before that was 1983. Labour had just run on "the longest suicide note in history" manifesto and
been soundly beaten. This time the Tories pushed through a series of fairly serious privatisation
bills but they didn't go Nazi or anything, and the British Communist Party never threatened Labour
for the left-wing of the nation (the SDP/Lib alliance almost did, but they are hardly radicals).
To summarise, when one party is very weak the other party definitely edges to the extremes, but not
in a serious way, so I don't see a reason to worry. The Nazis and Bolsheviks came to prominence when
the countries were in much much worse states and neither party was considered suitable to run the
country. Whatever you believe, that fact is that the Tories are doing well (sorry, very well) in the
polls and the BNP...aren't. The extremist parties aren't gaining, because the UK is still in a nice
2 party system, and it will take a bigger shock to the system than our current predicament to change
that. |
