If its protecting a friend or someone you care for and the truth would be too difficult for them to take then I think its best kept quiet. Ignorance is bliss unless its something that could threaten your and life and you really should know about it.

I don't know the exact physics of how a partially-full bottle of liquid flies, but it'll sure as hell hurt when it hits me.

This saying is true. There are a lot of things people don't really want to hear. Even if they think they do, they don't. Let's take cheating for example. If you know a husband or boyfriend that is cheating on your friend for sure, do you tell them? The answer is "no". Once you tell your friend they become suspicious and when they find out the truth, they hold it against you for telling them. Or if someone asks you if they are fat and they are, you aren't going to make them feel bad and say "yes". Lots of things are better left unsaid unless absolutely necessary.

It is true that what people know won't hurt them, but people shouldn't lie because of this. People will be much more hurt if they find out that they've been lied to than if someone was honest with them.

It IS lying no matter what; people just won't know it. And it's good to know some things and not lie; Hitler lied to many countries, betrayed them, and invaded them despite his lie to be their ally. If you're protecting a loved one, fine. If you're lying out of evil, you're bad.
