| The Energy Saving Bulb Is An Energy Trade Off |
| I agree with energy saving bulbs, but at what cost to the environment? Are they cheaper to produce for one? What about the disposal of these mercury filled lights in general tips leeching into our waterways? What affects are the strobe action going to have on people? Are they all they are cracked up to be, as I for one hate them, it is difficult to read by them, you cannot dim them, they attract more insects into the home. I think this is an energy trade off, what do you think? Are you for them or against them? |

It is of course a trade off but one that definitely lands on the positive side. Mercury is also used
in the making of regular light bulbs and factoring the life length of the bulb and the additional
mercury emitted from the coal burning power plants (still over 70% in the U.S.), it adds up to
significantly less mercury per hour of light produced. Not to mention CO, CO2, NOx, and SO2. As to
the quality of the lighting I have no reply except to say I use them through out my house and
don’t mind them at all. But believe me, as a professional environmental scientist for over a
decade, the reduced environmental impact of the energy saving, long life bulbs, over traditional
bulbs is significant and across the board. |

I am against these weird types of bulbs. I do not see any difference in their benefits. We have used
regular light bulbs for many years and they have not really done anything to the environment, so why
change them? You are right when you say that you cannot dim them and they are difficult to read by.
I think they may save energy, but it will cost humans their eye sights. They are not worth it. They
look weird and they have no real benefits. I think people are just wanting to try to change things
and justify it. Too bad, light bulbs are not the way to do this. |

As the author I am against them for the simple reason I think there is more energy to make them,
mercury is a poison and these enhance the risk of contamination; especially where children are
concerned. I wonder the increase of headaches because of the strobe effect and eye problems. It
has also been dumped on society without I feel to much research. However if it can be proved
otherwise I will accept the findings of which I can find nothing at present. |
