We Cannot Save Planet Earth Unless There Is The Necessary Political Will To Do So.
If everyone one Planet earth lobbied for - and practiced - lower energy usage, fewer carbon emissions, greener environmental practices etc then politicians - who see only monetarist goals and economic growth as measures of performance - may well use all these factors against the very citizens they represent. Westernised societies need a complete root and branch revision of how they live, work and consume energy and resources.

If you mean to stop global warming, then I agree. In our country, for any environmental protection laws to be passed, they must go through the government. If there is a serious political will to help the environment, more of these laws will be passed. So if that is what you speak of, then yes, I agree.

I am not sure if I am agreeing on all of this but I do know this. I live in Alaska and I see the effects of global warming and the government's refusal to do anything about it. We cant stop them from drilling on the North Slope or from going in a federally protected park such as ANWAR to drill for oil for natural gas because the people of the United States feel the need to ruin everything they touch. The native people use all parts of everything they don't waste anything what is so hard about that? It has to be the politicians who start the ball rolling to protect the earth and allow all to live clean and disease free because these new illnesses that are killing people are environment related.

I was saddened to read of Alaska's plight Moonak; here in Australia, where petroleum based fuels are dearer than in USA, we thankfully have no nuclear power [yet?] but we do nonetheless consume vast amounts of coal and gas energy. Our politicians, unlike past US President Carter, have no desire to reduce national route speed limits to around 50mph (80kph) in order to conserve fuel and help save the environment. (I do my bit and more, but Australians are shamefully very near USA figures per head capita carbon emissions).

Unfortunately, the whole of modern-day society is geared around gasoline guzzling 4-wheel drive off-reader or monster diesel vehicles that are simply not as environmentally green as their manufacturers' claim. Or worse, air planes that can directly pollute up to 300% more so than cars. No politician is going to try to stop the wheels of industry, food distribution, or people from flying around the globe on their holidays.

Here's an inconvenient truth: every year in Australia, more people die from lung/respiratory diseases attributable to petrochemical fumes than are killed on Australia's roads.

Solar and Wind renewable energy sources are perhaps our only real hope, yet funding for research and development in them is not only limited but is also consistently questioned by those politicians who really want a nuclear-based economy.

Planet Earth - and by that we must mean that sustainable and habitable niche occupied by man and the plants and the animals (biosphere) cannot fight this battle and survive - we are committing both murder and suicide at the same time; perhaps someone would like to raise this as a debating point.

Sudipa; I agree with your comments but am perhaps more sceptical regarding general human nature and issues of man's' demonstrable failure to comply with any but the smallest environmental measures - even when it means our survival as a species.

Actually, what there needs to be, in order to save the planet, is an actual problem to save it from.

The earth will take care of its self as it has done for millions of years. It took the dinosaurs millions of years to destroy their environment. I think we are just fine for at least another million years or so don't worry we will all be long gone before thisa happens. Besides man can control his environment like no other animal.

I just have to comment on your attitude about the earth regenerating itself. Man obviously hasn't controlled anything he has destroyed everything that he has come into touch with because as humans we want it all and don't allow anything to stay the way it was. We pollute, throw garbage out, what do you do that is keeping your family alive? Are you doing your part in keeping earth clean for your children to live on.

Planet Earth is truly heading for a catastrophe, given the unbridled growth in population and industrial production. Both these factors are ultimately leading to the destruction of the ecological system. When the ecology is destroyed, we ourselves will cease to exist and immediate steps must be taken to stop this destruction. It is very easy to say that this is only possible if there is the necessary political will to do so. However, we have only to think slightly deeply to realize that that is not all there is to it. It is we the people who are doing it. Politicians may play their part in educating the masses about the perils of environmental damage. They may take steps to see that things stay under control. But it is ultimately us the people who have to control ourselves and those around us to stop this final destruction.

Exactly, we're not hurting the planet at all. Nothing we could conceivably do, except maybe launch every nuclear weapon we have, could really do any demonstrable harm to the planet. What people are really talking about is harming HUMANITY and our self-indulgent lifestyles. Let's not pretend that we care about the planet at all, we care about our personal comfort while living on the planet.

I agree that we need dramatic political action to address environmental problems. But not to save planet Earth. The Earth will survive with or without us. The only question is whether human beings, and their civilisation, will survive. Since our problems are accelerating and the US government continues to block effective international action to address them, this century is probably our last.
