| We Are More Likely To Be Struck By Lightning Than Killed By Terrorism |
| The menace of terrorism pervades our political life. Politicans talk about it constantly to gain support for new initiatives, most of which involve infringing our civil liberties in some way. But how grave is the terrorist threat really? Statistics show that it is more likely we will be struck by lightning than killed in a terrorist incident. So does it really make sense to base much of our foreign and domestic policy on this phantasmal threat? |

A little while back I watched a political ad for a guy running for governor of Nebraska that
featured a long discourse on his tough stance against terrorism. There are no terrorists in
Nebraska. You are more likely to get hit by Al Sharpton being flung from a catapult than killed by
terrorist in Nebraska. There is only corn and people doing a truly amazing array of things to the
corn, in Nebraska. I realize that corn… I mean terrorism is a real issue but it is also being used
to engender fear among Americans and make them easier to control at the voting booth. |

Not necessarily, unless you hold a metal rod in the air during a thunder storm. If that's the case,
tell that to the thousands of innocent people who were killed in the 9/11 attack. Or the attack on
the Pentagon. |

As both scenarios are highly unlikely, I say it's 50-50(%). |

Depends on where you live. Some places going grocery shopping is a life and death decision because
of the murderous Islamics. |

The fact that there have not been any major incidents does not mean there have been no attempts. If
measures were not taken in the prevention of terrorism would there have been any? I think so. The
world is not a nice place and our way of life is hated by extremists who want us dead. I still have
smoke detectors even though the threat of a fire is pretty tiny. I have insurance on my house, even
though i don't think that there is any likelihood of a problem.
I really am not one to give away my personal freedoms. I treasure them, and guard against them
being taken away. To date, other than the money side of it, my life has not been impacted at all by
any measures taken. Yeah i have to deal with nonsense at the airport, and some of it seems real
silly, but it is not such a terrible hardship. There are no losses to my liberty that i can see. I
know that the writ of habeas corpus has been suspended for those that are deemed enemy combatants to
the United States. Is that a major encroachment in my personal freedom? Not really. "Wiretapping"
on international calls by those suspected of terror? I think i am okay with that. |

Tell that to the thousands that lost their lives in the Worl Trade Centers. Terrorism is real. This
country has been attacked. It can happen again. Are you getting your statistics from "I invented the
Internet" Al Gore? Remember these, USS Cole. US Embassy in Beruit and first bombing of the WTC. |
