Water conservation is a great idea and everyone should be encouraged to be more careful how they use
this essential natural resource, just as much as society encourages all of us to recycle. The really
nice thing about conserving water is that it is relatively easy to do and takes minimal effort.
The first step is to ensure that there are no leaking taps in our home, which drip water all day
long. More people should consider taking a bath, instead of a long shower, and if one goes with the
former option, then it is a good idea to close the drain with a plug and make sure that the tub is
no more than one-third full of water. If bathing is not possible, some environmentalists have
suggested limiting showers to five minutes.
Other basic steps can also be taken to ensure we conserve water. When you brush your teeth, it is
smart to turn the water off, and not just let it run down the drain. In the summer, you should only
water your lawn every other day. In some jurisdictions, there are actually laws that regulate this,
in order to conserve water. Additionally, when cleaning up in the kitchen, always remember to wait
until the dishwasher is full of plates and cutlery, before turning it on.
All of these steps take little effort on our part, but they can certainly go a long way in water
conservation. We might as well start worrying about this now, because many countries (including
Australia) will be facing severe shortages in the near future. |
