Thatcher Was Not Really That Bad
In my opinion she wasn't! Yes she implemented dramatic changes, but she was the only Prime Minister who ever has. People complain, but they voted her in! Before voting conservative they should of watched the many party broadcasts, and the public would have been aware of the changes she was planning to implement. People despise what she did i.e privatisation, bringing down trade unions and the coal mines. But when Labour got in again, why the hell didn't they change everything back? Thatcher was a strong leader! The one who dared!

I'm not in the UK nor am I deeply familiar with her legacy but I always though of Margaret Thatcher as essentially a very strong woman able to hold her own against any other world leader. Granted there may be a lot of small details I'm missing.

There are many details you are missing. She basically dehumanised the country, by introducing a wild form of capitalism and privatised everything she could get her hands on (apart from the NHS and Education which she wouldn't dare).

She caused mass unemployment and destroyed job security, by undemocratically pinning the unoins.

She also was a keen sponsor of dispicable Facist dictators; General Suharto and Augustine Pinochet.

The best man for the job.

Wasn't too bad, in my opinion the only thing she ever did wrong was to cave in over the pole tax.!:-))

Yes and I've already stated my opinion why on the other Thatcher debate.

Oi! Site administrator. By changing the debate heading, you have now reversed the meaning completely, so we are all now in the wrong columns.

Thatcher made people wish the IRA had succeeded in their bombing campaigns. The only thing that made Ronald Reagan worse than Thatcher was she couldn't get away with as much, there was accountability.

Thatcher was no "iron maiden", she was a witch and an old battleaxe.

I'm not here to launch some great defence of Tony Blair; he made many mistakes, most namely his foreign policy.

But let's not draw away from the fact that if you lived in the north, Margaret Thatcher was the worst woman ever come onto this Earth, let alone the worst PM. Her 12 years of deregulation and privitisation led to high unemployment, a massive gap between the rich and the poor, and communities, something supposed to be at the heart of Conservative thinking, wrecked beyond repair. I understand that many people would argue that I'm just a northerner who's moaning about nothing, and that if she was not bad, she'd have been voted out.

But let's not forget that in the 79, 83 AND the 87 election, the left got a majority vote, meaning over half the country opposed her policies that we are still paying for, more than ever, today.

Thatcher was a strong leader, but so was Hitler and Stalin. In fact her inhumane economic policies caused unbelievable hardship to a great amount of families, which is still resonant today.

Thatcher also had a very contraversial foreign policies, with her friendships with General Suharto, who killled over a million people and Military dictator augustine pinnochet, not to mention the falklands war.

Her anti Union laws are contrary to democracy, not allowing freedom demonstrate about industrial disputes.

As to why labour did not reverse this? I cannot imagine why

In fairness, Thatcher started what has caused todays financial crisis, as in increasing home ownership by deregulating the banks, to allow capitalism to go wild, which turned houses into cash cows and not homes.

truspud: the woman had backbone while Blair had a bone head. There are more families in a worse state under labor any way:

As for foreign policy and cronyism, If they were handing out medals,(and they probably are on the quiet) Blair's would be encrusted with Rubies and Emeralds:

I refer to my comments below regarding unions.

We were and still are a nation of preferred home owners. Margaret Thatcher gave people the right to buy, instead of paying high rents all their lives, a plan continued by Labor yet ruined by the fact that their is so much red tape when buying and selling property now.

The fact that Brown, the "iron chancellor". huh, caved in over Northern Rock has lead to the current begging bowls the banks have been passing round being filled, fueling the problem instead of fixing it.

Property saw it's biggest boom and bust under Labor,huh...;-(

Actually, as you well know, Rose, the FPTP system is unfair, she did not win by a majority and the only reason she did win the plurality vote was because people in marginal constituencies voted for Conservative MPs, not Thatcher, herself.
And to be a good leader, and to impose such radical change, do you not think she should have consulted the governed beforehand? Using a referendum, preferrably?
And Labour probably did not change back because, due to Tony Blair, they had new proposals and a new way of thinking, they were no longer socialist democrats, but the Third Way. "Britain forward, not back," was a logo used by Tony Blair, was it not? Why undo everything all over again to merely spite the Conservative party?

Actually as you well know MaYbCaKe ( and Why do you have such a difficult to type handle?)
Blair said he would change the system to first past the post, if elected, and he won 3 general elections with a fraction of the votes.

Oh and no surprise either that he did nothing about the Unions. They were bringing the country to it's Knees and Thatcher was right to show them who was Boss.

The striking miners have themselves to blame!;-))
