Voyager was awesome. The whole idea of venturing through an unknown quadrant of the galaxy recreated
the original atmosphere of mystery that the first Star Trek, with Kirk et al., conjured up. The fact
that it also constituted the home of the Borg made it even more appealing.
Undoubtedly, the Borg were the coolest enemies Star Trek ever created and the Voyager series let us
see them up close and personal in a way that had never been done before. The idea of species 8472
(or whatever it was), the species more powerful than the Borg, was a stroke of dramatic genius. The
Scorpion episodes, particularly the first, were of cinematic quality.
Voyager also continued the worthy progressive tradition of the Star Trek series by being one of the
first major television series to showcase a woman in a position of command responsibility.
The series end was also handled beautifully. This was always going to be a problem for Voyager
because everyone knew what the end was going to be : Backslaps and celebrations with loved ones as
the ship finally got home. In other words, there was no suspense or uncertainty, so it would be
boring for the audience. The Voyager writers found an ingenious way around this, though, one that
also tied off the Borg storyline. In the final episode, they gave the audience what they wanted, but
in a suspenseful and surprising way, which is said to be the essence of good dramatic writing. |

Are you out of your mind? Voyager was widely hailed as the WORST Star Trek series, perhaps
competing with Enterprise for the worst Berman and Braga screwup of all time.
The best series was TOS, hands down. Everything that came after was a pale shadow. |

Never saw the original series, hated the latest one and deep space nine was a right mess. I like
next generation apart from any episode involving 'Data' the android as the main focus point of the
plot, i just find him really annoying. For the most part I like voyager too but it seems a bit more
'soppy' than next generation which can also irritate me. Next generation all the way i say. |

I never really got over the original series, which was characterized by a certain pleasant 1960s
quaintness that I always found to be really endearing. I would say that the Next Generation was a
very distant second. I gave up on Voyager at the very beginning, finding it a bit sterile. My
problem may be that I tend to approach sequels or re-makes with a high degree of suspicion, thinking
that the producers are doing little more than rehashing old storylines and concepts.
Other than the somewhat primitive special effects in the original series, what it had which Voyager
did not, were characters that reflected the contemporary world in which the program was made. You
had an African American woman (Uhura), in the middle of, and shortly after the Civil Rights movement
playing a lead role on television. You also had a Russian (Chekov), reminding viewers of the reality
of the Cold War. There were also a couple of fantastic, memorable episodes which worked with what
was then recent history. I remember one episode when Kirk goes back in time to a world under Nazi
rule. This combination of rich, deep characters and the link to the contemporary world, as well as
recent history which that world still struggled with is what made the original series top-notch. |

I didn't like any of the Star Trek series. I'm more of a Star Wars nerd. |
