Violent TV Shows, Movies, And Video Games Are In No Way Responsible For Violent Events.
In the aftermath of violent events such as school shootings and serial murders, people like to use violent movies, video games, and movies as scapegoats. There is reason to do this. The Shooters at Columbine and Virginia Tech were treated like outcasts by their peers, as a result they got angry and lost control. So, such violent events are caused by internal factors. So, there is no need for such censorship.

No, they aren't. We are responsible for our own actions.

I think the parents and other adults who use videogames and other violent things just don't want to admit they might have been the cause.

It's possible that a film, game or television show could act as a trigger for a disturbed mind. But so too could a book, a sermon or a political speech. Something else must have gone massively wrong over a prolonged period to get a person into a state from which they could be triggered into violence.

It's foolish to seize on games or films and blame killing sprees on them. Does anyone propose banning books over Timothy McVeigh's bombing in Oklahoma City, which was supposedly inspired by a novel; or John Lennon's assassin who had a copy of Catcher in the Rye.

In the end, this demagoguery is really just an attempt by old people to oppress the young : Seize on the things that have changed in their lifetime and blame them.

I suppose in some cases these violent influences can have an impact, but for the most part, I doubt they have such a powerful effect.

Violent TV shows, movies, and video games give people ideas of what to do. Then when they get mad, they repeat what they saw on TV.

I happen to think this is like the whole "which came first, the chicken or the egg" thing.

It would be silly to deny that people (all ages) are desensitized to violence the more they're subjected to it. Does that cause violent acts? I have to lean towards no, it does not. In the end, a person is going to act/react to their environment. If a mind is unstable enough to commit violent acts, the media violence doesn't help, but isn't the cause.

What I think is interesting to consider is that perhaps people are not a product of these products, but perhaps these products are a product of people. The garbage spewed by the media (TV, movies, video games, music, etc...) is obviously a product of an already violent or perversely sexual mind.

I think the issue of influence of products on people is less concerning than peoples' influence on products.

I agree that they may not be sole responsible, but they do play a huge part in the violent act. Kids today grow up watching violence. They see it as acceptable and their parents are too lazy to teach them otherwise. There are even parents who breed their kids to be violence. Kids believe that things they see on TV are cool, so they are more likely to act it out. I believe that TV and video games are not the sole cause, but they do play a huge role in the violence overall.

No.

People are not blank-slates to be written upon.
All is a matter of the will, and choices.

I disagree.
