Despite the unclear definition of "Mad" I'd say yes he was. But he was a brilliant artist. Also,
some have theorized that instead of a mental illness he may have had Asperger Syndrome which is a
mild variation on autism and technically isn't an illness at all - it's just a difference.
But yeah, cutting off parts of your body which can't grow back is usually a BAD sign.
