Most of you probably have never heard of him but his career spanned two decades. He is a freak of the highest order ranging from smooth piano ballads to industrial clangs and distortions, his lyrics are gritty poetry, his voice started normal and ended gravelly like Louis Armstrong. Often drunks and thugs and the dredge of society were his subjects and he himself was often mistaken for a vagrant although it was part of his schtick. There is no one quite like Tom Waits.
I gotta go with Neil Young.
Some of the best folk songs ever.
Some of the best country songs ever.
Some of the best rock songs ever.
From Heart of Gold to Cinammon Girl to Down By the River to Rockin in the Free World.
From Buffalo Springfield to Crosby, Stills Nash and Young to Crazy Horse to The Shocking Pink to The
International Harvesters not to mention all the solo material.
Combine all that with his refusal to give into record company demands which got him sued before it
was the popular thing to do...then the link to Johnny Rotten and being the Godfather of Grunge.
