I'm a HUGE supporter of public transportation and in fact I sold my car when I moved to Boston
almost 20 years ago and have relied on public transit for work and city life ever since. And I
personally would benefit if all public transit was free. HOWEVER, your debate claim just goes too
far. 1) The cost to make this 100% in every city is prohibitive. In fact most of these transit
systems are already very heavily subsidized yet they still depend strongly on fares to come anywhere
close to paying all the bills. 2) When people receive something for free the abuse of it goes way
up - whether it's throwing down their trash or spreading graffiti or simply become arses to each
other or to transit staff. The act of making people pay something shows them they can't take it for
granted. 3) Due to the need for infrastructure for delivering supplies and freight and such these
cities still need roads and traffic lights and traffic cops, etc, which means the city still has to
fund the world of drivers the same as the world of mass transit riders, and even with the drivers
those individuals help shoulder the costs by paying tolls and parking and registrations, etc.
Drivers don't get a purely free ride even if they did buy their car. In both cases the government
needs help with funding in part by the users of the service. |

And watch the car companies around America, indeed around the world, die? I don't think so, the car
companies create a massive source of jobs and income for our countries infrastructure. To allow such
a huge company to die would be allowing our country to die along with it. Not to mention
international car companies who appeal to the largest consumer market on the planet, America. Toyota
and BMW have plants here that would fail as well because of our switch to government transportation.
Not only this, but they would lose huge profit margins that may shove them into bankruptcy and
therefore destroy the economies of other countries because Americans (who are the largest car buyers
in the world) would stop buying products. |
