There Should Be A Tax On Fatty Foods
The number of overweight people are increasing all over the world, not just in America or Britain, but also in China, India and even Africa. It costs Americans $117 billion per year in additional health-care expenses. Someone may argue that its not fair for companies that produce fatty foods, but for the well-beings of whole society, it should be a good thing.

I agree, given the tax on anything else the government taxes the heck out of that is not good for people. Why not fatty foods? Especially, the ones that are not things like meats with a high fat content. Junk food that has no nutritional value might as well be added to the list since it is not a necessity as is other food.

Since nowadays people are being more obese day by day and this number is also increasing in countries like Britain, America, China, India and even Japan, so it is really getting a problem for the society in terms of health. People are unknowingly taking up fatty foods and as a result they are accumulating unnecessary fats in their body which in some cases are causing real trouble to their heart. Most obese patients are found to have heart problems. They should be made aware of such things and in order to make them not have so much of fatty foods there should be a tax levied on such foods so that they stop buying such foods and reduce the consumption of such foods in their day to day life. At least by doing this we can ensure that everybody is having lesser amount of fatty foods.

I think it sounds like a good idea but it all depends on how it's done as we need some fats in our diets to be healthy.
It would have to be a tax on fast, fatty foods, fish and chips and fried foods and I'm not sure how it would work or how it would be implemented, though I do think it might discourage people from unhealthy eating.
I agree that ,eventually ,we all end up paying for the effects of unhealthy eating, through rising health care costs for related illnesses.
The government and families need to educate , especially young people to eat a healthy diet and make them responsible for their own diets and health. If taxing unhealthy, fatty foods is part of this , then I think it's a good idea.
Schools and colleges should offer only healthy foods and if students wanted to eat junk food they could choose to go elsewhere. If the options in all eating places were healthy we would soon become a healthier nation.

This question has nothing to do with the so-called ‘Nanny State’ interfering in the day to day lives of people. As usual, it is down to bottom line: The sheer cost of the ongoing health care treatment for obese people and generating income for the Government.

After all, why should society at large be burdened with the cost of treating obese people when 90 per cent of the time their ailments are self-inflicted? No one forced all that junk food down their throat, did they? The cure is in their own hands if the willpower is present.

At a time when funding for the NHS is stretched, budgets should not be devoted to treatments for avoidable conditions that occurred due to over-eating.

Furthermore, there is already a precedent of taxing things that are bad for us, cigarettes, whisky, wine, petrol. There’s nothing new in the idea of taxing fatty food.

There is a higher tax on food of convenience/ prepared foods that is why if you get foodstamps/government food cards you can't buy prepared food with it.

Big people eat big.
Some people can eat what ever they like and never get fat.
The government don't need more excuses to order us around and charge us for the privilege. You don't happen to be a politician by any chance?

Sin taxes are wrong. I don't need the government to make my decisions for me, especially since they have a pretty horrible track record by themselves.

I'll keep it short: The government should not tell me how to eat, raise my child, or anything else, really. If I want to spank my kid when he's being bad and eat a supersized big mac, I should be able to, without paying a stupid tax. (for the burger)

This is ridiculous! I don't need the government regulating my weight, or well-being! I would prefer they spend the time regulating themselves and not worry so much about me...what I'm eating, wearing on my head, or listening to. Keep it real.

Taxing fatty foods would open up a whole Pandora's box and it would raise questions of the government's role in dictating how citizens live their lives. If we were to tax fatty foods, why not also impose a surcharge on all refined sugars (including those in soft drinks, candies, chocolates and cakes) and a separate tariff on products containing artificial flavours and preservatives?

While it would be impractical to impose a tax on all fatty foods, outlawing trans-fats seems like a perfectly acceptable and intelligent solution to some of the health problems people are facing. A handful of countries have already indicated that they aim to regulate trans-fats, including Australia, Canada, Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States. Some cities in the US, such as New York, have actually banned these dangerous fats altogether.

I think people should take care of their own health and should avoid obesity. Man should do everything moderately....
America paying so much on health care, but its getting double the amount from the other business sectors. There are many countries in which people are paying for their health care not their government. So I think American govt should educate their people about the disadvantages of eating fatty food. And let the healthier people live happily and inexpensively
