One persons god is another persons demon so I'd agree. To us Bin Laden is the bad guy while to them
we are the bad guys so there is only opinion. |

There's evil, good, opinions, then religion. Logically there is good and evil easily noticed by the
common man. Then there are opinions that usually deify the logical. Then there's Religion that tells
us what is good and evil. |

Lol, I actually started a debate like this (Morality is a matter of opinion, not fact)
I believe that morals are caused by a combination of social standards, personal experiences, what
your parents told you, and a bit of sense and logic.
Also some morals are caused by our genes (like the moral to never harm children is caused by our
instincts telling us to protect our kids, and extending it to everyone else's, too).
The only basic morals, the ones that everyone who doesn't have some mental disorder or another have,
are caused by instinct. Everything else is built off of that, logic, and the desire for power. |

I agree. Many believe in some form of absolute morality, I'm not one of those. My opinion is that we
humans are the only beings capable of comprehending morality - morality exists because we exist.
Without comprehension of morality there is none. Morality is subjective, the vast majority believe
that killing is evil but some disagree - without an objective judge or 'writer' of objective
morality then morality is created subjectively by us. Opinion is, by definition, subjective and so
if morality is subjective then it is merely opinion.

If there is no such thing as good and evil then what is the point of law and order ? |

In the vast majority of examples I'd say you're right. Good and evil go back to religious views
because in nature there's really no such thing as an evil animal.
But I hesitate to say no evil exists. There are some people so bad to the core I can't imagine any
other way to describe them. If you rape, torture, mutilate, cannibalize, and destroy and are fully
aware of what you did (i.e. Not insane) and plan to do it again every chance you get then "evil"
fits pretty well as a label.
But granted that's a very obscure scenario. Most of the time it is a matter of opinion. I just
can't agree evil doesn't exist. |
