The West Is Unfairly Demonizing China
China is being criticised by the west for its poor record on human rights and also its high levels of pollution and CO2 emissions. I think this is a clear case of double-standards which can be described as the west 'pulling the ladder up after itself'

Definitely! Then again every time a "non western" or "non democratic" country begins doing well either in their economy or other ways America and Britain are straight on their backs!
Its not hard to figure out why lol

America uses "human rights" as a diplomatic stick to beat non-compliant countries over the head with. Human rights violators are OK as long as they show appropriate submission to the great superpower. Uzbekistan, for example, whose leader boils his opponents alive (according to the former British ambassador) can be confident of receiving minimal criticism of his abysmal human rights record because he cooperates in the War on Terra and is thus considered a good team player.

Countries like Russia and China, however, which show a degree of independence, even defiance, of American will, can expected to have the whole human rights spiel deployed against them at every opportunity.

And, yes, the irony of a country which openly practices torture, which has set up the greatest international network of human rights-abusing sites since the Second World war, faulting others for their less than stellar record is both amusing and grotesque. But Americans have always regarded law as just another stick to hit people with, rather than something that actually applies to them.

I think their lack of human rights is blitzed by the US's illegal war, killing hundred of thousands, it's unfair trade laws ensuring poverty in Sub Saharan Africa continues, it's drilling for oil of natural reserves....you get my picture.

keep in mind that the US has not killed hundreds of thousands in Iraq. Suicide cowards...er...bombers are responsible for the vast majority of civilian deaths in Iraq.

The US cannot even remotely be compared to China with human rights issues. Amnesty International stated, "China is the #1 human rights violater in the world," and its true. China was the worlds largest system of slave labor camps, nationwide forced abortions and sterilization, mental and physical abuse toward political prisoners. China is the "biggest supplier of weapons of mass destruction to rouge states"said the CIA, American Office of Naval Intelligence. Military occupation and genocide in Tibet along with the brutal repression of all religions. Routine torture of Tibetan monks and nuns, practitioners of Falon Gong, and any who turn to religion instead of the Chinese Communist Regime. Look at Hu Jia an activist for China's environment and awareness for AIDS, was arrested and sentenced to jail for three and half years for speaking out against his government. "Patriotic Classes" are required for all especially political prisoners going against the government, its nothing but an attempt to brainwash people into think communism is great. China has to many problems to list and America largely to blame by continuing trade with them.

Well i'm not saying that China is the perfect state but western states particularly the US and the UK are clearly putting out the message that its one rule for us and another for them. As I have already stated, it was not so long ago in the US when the McCarthyite purges saw a huge clampdown the right to free speech. Guantanamo bay violates the right to detention without trial. In recent years there has been a significant curtailment of civil liberties in the US and the UK in the name of the war on terror. And of course there was the decision to go to war in Iraq, a decision that was based on dodgy intelligence about weapons of mass destruction that Iraq did not possess. You speak of China being the "biggest supplier" of weapons to rogue states, yet it is well known that the US has a history of befriending repressive regimes for example, supplying Iraq with weapons to fight Iran. This trend of "China-bashing" is nothing more than an attempt to make China the scapegoat of the problems of the west.
What about self-determination and self-governance?
Not only is criticising China hypocritical it is also pointless. Democracy can not be achieved by external pressure to respect human rights, it can only be achieved by the people managing their own affairs.

We are not unfairly demonizing China.
There is a lot about China to demonize.

Is is fair for the west to criticise them for something they are all guilty of?
I'm not saying that China is a perfect country, i know they have a poor record of human rights, but what about guantanamo?
It's a clear case of double standards, one rule them and another for us.

The human race didn't stop evolving in the spring of 1945. We continue to evolve and things need to happen in order for us to do so.
China needs to catch up.

China has an appalling human rights record. Any form of protest in China is immediately stamped out. Not only that but the economical rise of the yellow dragon has had a huge impact on the western economical growth as a whole. The one country trying to balance this unequal rise, is India, and the squalor, filth and poor employment working wage conditions in India are on a similar parr to vast parts of China. Add to this China's high levels of pollution and C02 EMISSIONS, then China is at the moment devastating our planet.

On the other hand, were things any different in England during the Industrial Revolution for example? A nation with no environmental control, a London smog which killed hundreds each year, where women couldn't vote, the poor were given the workhouse and the workers had no bargaining power. Kids were sent down mines and up chimneys.

Hardly a utopian society.
