I am not so sure it's a bad idea. The Conservative government in Britain in the eighties decided to
sell off council houses to the tenants at affordable prices, with the intention of making us a
nation of home owners, or conservatives.I have never fully understood why it was considered one of
the greatest things they did.
For a start, surely this helped push up house prices to the over inflated state which they are
today? People would buy a house from the council for say (at the time) £10,000 pounds, and the
following day, could but them on the market for £40,000. This instantly made it more difficult for
those starting out, looking for a house. No council houses available, and instantly inflated prices.
I think this is part of the problem that is affecting the housing market today.
Then we proceed into a buy to let culture. Many people buying houses to let out, often to DHS, which
left the government, or us the tax payer, paying over inflated mortgages for the letters to make
profit on. Before these people would have been put into council housing.
I understand the social implications. At the time, Britain was a borderline militant country, but if
you had a house to lose, you would be less inclined to want to strike, more inclined to seek, or
need, employment.
There will never be a return to social housing. The ones being built in my home town are on a part
share scheme, where you buy into a percentage value of the house, giving affordable means into the
housing market. There is obviously not enough of them. The young people I know starting out, are
often living three or four to a house or apartment, as it is the only way they can afford the rents.
I would hate to be 18 and looking for my own place today. Must be near impossible. |

Well done spud what do you think the bleeding government would love to do?!? Its so easy making that
claim but its not easy on an island so small, furthermore in America a social housing programme
would cost so much.... Its the right idea but please think of the practicalities... |

It would require a massive tax hike to build housing for that many people, and the extra financial
strain would push even more people into foreclosure.
It would be a good idea if it could be done without raising taxes, but good luck getting the
American government to pull that off. |

So do you think people loosing half the value of their homes is the right answer? I do not.
The Banks got people into this mess by allowing them to borrow more than the property was worth
speculating that the prices would rise even further.
The greatest demand for homes has come about because of opportunistic migration.
That has overloaded the housing stock more than any other factor.
The cost of Housing is related to various factors one being how much it costs to build them.
Builders will only do it for profit. Materials alone have doubled in the past few years.
Houses in the north, Manchester and Hull for instance or in Wales, that cost five thousand pounds
five years ago are still selling for 25 thousand.
What sort of a life are you suggesting for the people who bought these houses thinking there dreams
had come true? |
