The Teaching Of A Modern Foreign Language Should Remain Compulsory In Schools.
MFLs help in so many ways, and seeing people rejecting them because of their difficulty makes me irritable. "Everyone should just speak English" is possibly the worst reason for not taking a second language.

Yes!
Language is something that can benefit you in life
whether its for holiday or a job in a foreign country it's still beneficial so i think yeah languages shouldn't really be banned. They should always be compulsory in schools

In a world where every country is only a plane ticket away, everyone needs to be able to have some sort of method of communication. Assuming that English should be the language of choice is absolutely idiotic, the Americans and the British don't rule the world. We need to be proactive and be able to talk in several languages.

I agree. English is shrinking faster than any other language. (Not really shrinking, but every other language is growing many times faster than English is and it will eventually not be needed.)

Languages are necessary for life nowadays if you don't want to be working at a fast food joint. Even then, you might wanna know Spanish or Madarin Chinese (depends on where you live) or another language so you can communicate.

It's also been shown that people who know more than one language are more likely to be hired, get paid better, and kept on by the company. Language can also be a driving force for getting into a good college. Do you take the kid who speaks two or three languages fluently and is currently learning another, or the one that only speaks English, and they have the same GPA? You take the multilingual kid, most often.

Of course, a much wider selection should be available earlier. At my school, for instance, in order to get into IB Program and/or an advanced diploma you had to start taking a Foreign Language in middle school. Which ones were offered, you ask? Spanish and French. Not anything else, which caused a lot of my friends, who were interested in learning Chinese or Japanese, to not bother taking the necessary language.

My High School doesn't do much better. It offers German, Spanish, French, Latin, and maybe Chinese if enough people decide to take it. I'm currently learning Japanese outside of school, because despite it being more useful than German I can't seem to find it at my school and it's a language I'm interested in learning.

Being able to speak any one of French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic or Hindi would almost double your career prospects and employability, especially if you don't have a Bachelor's Degree.

The more languages you can speak, the more people you can talk to. And language isn't just about talking, it's about reading. Being able to read books or documents will expose you to ideas or history you are ignorant of or not exposed to in English.

English is a lousy language, inconsistent with poor grammar and rules, and all the quality and breeding of a street dog that fornicates with any other dog in heat. An English speaker who "thinks" he doesn't need to learn others' languages and that others should learn English is not only a chauvinist.

My second biggest regret in life was being an idiot chauvinist as a kid and not attempting to learn French when it was freely taught in public schools. If a second language class is available in your school for free, learn it. ANY second language is worthwhile.

Ha, my English teacher used to say that "English is the kind of language that would follow other languages down dark alleys, shoot them, and go through their pockets for loose grammar."

I agree. English is a very inconsistent language.
"To every rule there is an exception," as my English teacher would say when explaining grammar.

The only language courses my school provides (excluding ESL) are Spanish, French, and German. Handy, if you are going to travel a small portion of Europe.

Granted at least 2 years of foreign language is mandatory for graduation (at least here it is), the selection of languages, however, is pathetic. I currently study Japanese and Latin OUTSIDE of the classroom, on my own time, along with track, orchestra, and debate and still manage to have a life. It isn't that bad.

A foreign language should be necessary, but a wide variety should be available.

So what do they speak in Latin America, charlie?

Learn it, even if you don't like it. You don't know when it may come in handy, even a few phrases can come in handy.

We have sent three daughters overseas (from USA) for a year and all three have become fluent in at least one other language. My whole family agrees with you.

How many times have I regretted studying French, and not Spanish, given the U.S. Demographics on the last 25 years!
Foreign language should remain compulsory in schools, not only so one can travel more easily, but to communicate with immigrants.
The U.S. Has an abysmal record of foreign language instruction. Only the college-bound study a second language, and most of us never speak it again after graduating.
The old saw is true: When we travel (or are at home), everyone must speak English to us, darn it! I feel entirely inadequate when I go to Central America and all of the Europeans speak at least three languages.
In my dad’s day, you had to learn either Latin or German to study the sciences. As an English lit major, I had to speak one foreign language to take upper-division comparative-lit classes. Now I am struggling to learn Spanish in night school.

They need to teach at least 1 other language rather their national language in each country.

If a school is gonna teach it, they need to teach it well. Learning a second language is hard, probably one of the hardest subjects a school can offer and if the syllabus and teaching is not up to scratch, pupils will get bored and won't learn anything

I agree. In a world where transport can take us anywhere and communication can connect people either side of the world in seconds, it is and outdated and arrogant view that English is the best language and that we only need to speak this language. The days of the British Empire are over, and if we want to be accepted among our European counterparts, I suggest that it's time we change our attitudes and preconceptions about Modern Foreign Languages.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not against learning a new language. Because I myself have been learning Mandarin Chinese for 6 years, and I'm pretty good at speaking it, and now I'm learning Cantonese, which is a Chinese dialect. The part that I'm against, is the fact that many are saying it should be mandatory.

I do not agree. I'm learning different languages, because that is my hobby, it is something that I enjoy. But I don't think it should be pressed upon people in schools. The impression that I'm getting by some of these comments, is one where, If a person does not desire to learn a new language, then that person is saying English is the best. People shouldn't be looked down upon just because they have no desire to learn a different language. It should all be entirely based upon choice, with no repercussions afterwards.

Why is it that everyone should learn French?! I read this comment and winced at the thought. Maybe it's because I can't stand that language.

Lets look at a bit of idealism: If everyone knew a single language there might be fewer misunderstandings and a greater brotherlyness in the world. So i'm for teaching all children in the world a single language, Latin would be my choice, and drop all other languages out of the circulum. Yes each country, region, continent is going to have its own languages retained but if we all knew a single language as a base we could spread information more easily and maybe even unite together for a common cause, which is possible if a bit difficult.

Edit: Sorry to had to fix a knew.

Latin? Tell that to the Chinese without pissing them off. Chinese is the most widely spoken language on the planet. If you think everyone should learn one language, you need to practice what you preach and learn Chinese with the rest of us. Sounds fun, doesn't it?
