I posted this debate before Putin accused Bush of stirring up Georgia for electoral purposes back
home.
America, with it's influence over Georgia, could have put the reigns on their president, but didn't.
They allowed them to react heavy handedly, possibly knowing full well Russia would counter react in
their inevitable heavy handed manner. The fact there is plausible possibility in what Putin says
which is blanked outright by our politicians and media, especially post Iraq, makes me wonder.
Russia stands to gain nothing bar worldwide condemnation whilst NATO gains a missile shield, a
growing alliance with former Soviet states, and the Republicans get a boost for being the "war"
party in American politics. The west has been sublimely bullying Russia for years by encroaching in
her sphere of influence making the likes of the Georgian affair inevitable. Iraq set a precedent for
our governments foreign policies and put a large hole in the blind faith that elected
representatives are honest and true with their words and intentions.
Russia's actions though indefensible are certainly understandable. What if the reverse had happened
on Americas doorstep?Or in an EU country?
If the West layed a trap, Russia walked into it.
If Georgia were already a member of NATO, we would be at war right now. I am unsure, possibly in my
naivety, why we court such nations, who's president was elected in a borderline coup, and don't try
to build bridges with the Russians. Our policy seems more intent on bear baiting.
The world seems to be building up for a new Cold War when, if any of the world leaders actually had
the minds of human beings, surely diplomatic measures would have prevented any crisis in the first
place?
World politics seem no better to me than children in a playground. But these men have very dangerous
toys. |
