The Lottery Is An Ingenious Scam.
It is a known fact that you have more chance of guessing a stranger's 11 digit mobile phone number in perfect order than winning the National Lottery. It plays on superstition and the "what if?" complex to draw people in. Say that a good 60% of people in the UK play the lottery for £2.5 million. Make the scale smaller and that is equivalent to 36 people playing for £2.50. What do you think?

The lottery may be a scam, but every once in a while a person wins. I won $12,900 ($3 wager) and my husband won $52,600 ($11 wager) both on pick fours. But, winning is few, far and in-between as we players all understand, but, you see we are risk takers--the stupidity falls under the category of how much you are wiling to loose at any given time. A fool and his money are soon departed. But, the wise wager wisely.

Sure it's a scam but the money earned helps to pay for education (in the US) ...and Lord knows we need all the help we can get!

This is so true. The lottery is a big rip off. Millions of people play it with the hopes of winning. However, if they understood the odds of winning, they would probably think twice before playing the lottery. The only people who really win the lottery on a weekly basis is the lottery commission. They make millions of dollars off of a bunch of losers. People should not spend a lot of money on the lottery. It is okay to play, just don't spend too much money on something you probably won't win. States should put a limit on the number of lottery cards that one can buy.

I've heard you have a better chance of dying on your way to buy a lottery ticket than you have of winning the lottery.

My uncle enters the lottery all the time, and of course, has never won. With all the money he spent on lottery tickets, he probably could have gotten something nice and fancy.

More and more states are relying on lottery, and now casinos, to assist in the funding of various noble endeavors, like education. It seems less than ethical to prey on the most desperate and least able to afford this "entertainment". If the politicians are so gutless that they cannot impose a legitimate tax, there should not be such a tax and their endeavors should wither on the vine. Our politicians see residents running to other states for their lottery tickets, or to the casinos and they wring their hands at the revenue the other states are gaining. These politicians are willing to gamble the gain of some tax dollars for the communities, families and lives that are lost in the process.

I agree with both of them... How many times has the powerball gotten above 1 million because nobody won... The more money put out there, the more people are going to spend, the more companies make

Hidell has pretty much said it all.

As a form of gambling it offers terrible odds compared to other forms available. The chances of picking 3 numbers is 50-1, for a payout of 9-1. Great. If you really want to be "in it to win it" just put your £1 on 10 correct football scores, the reward is more fitting to the chances of getting them right. You will still lose though, so best to just give a pound to a charity of your choice.

The lottery is like Robin Hood in reverse. It robs from the poor and gives to the rich. It takes money away from the poorest people for whom it represents the only real hope of escaping from their plight, and uses the cash to fund middle class leisure interests such as opera, theatre and classical music.

It could be construed as a tax on stupidity, but perhaps intelligent people, at least the ones that find themselves in government, should be taking pity on stupid people rather than taking advantage of them.

Umm? Do you realize that much of the revenue raised from the lottery is used to fund schools. This gives education to many socialeconomically disadvantaged children. Just think about that.

I don't think it is a scam because I don't think it is fixed. However, with huge slot machine winnings, like Megabucks, it has been shown that relatively few "types" win. No black person has ever won. Though men play more frequently, substantially more women win. And sometimes the same person wins more than once though they may play infrequently. Also, Megabucks seldom hits in major casinos. Something is just not right there.

I believe the Megabucks jackpot is random to a degree, but I think that when it comes up, controllers can pinpoint through cameras what type of person they want it to go to--to placate the major population and get them to continue playing. I have worked in the casino industry. I do know that those who play progressive slot machine are viewed though many hidden cameras in the machine because I have seen and posted the photos these machine cameras take and I have watched these unbelievably tiny cameras being installed.

The likelihood of winning the lottery is available and, one might say, well publicized; the public are aware how much they could win and how much they are paying. Nobody is forcing people to play, so I am unsure as to where the logic is in declaring it as an 'ingenious scam'. I would agree that it is unwise to enter the lottery, but to therefore support the idea that the concept is treacherous and deceitful is, I think, unjustified.

The lottery does not exist. Everyone is being deceived by the none existent lottery. In fact if there is one it is most likely controlled by Nazis and so should be incinerated.
