The Life Sentence Should Mean Life!
When a person has been convicted of a crime and the judge says they have a life sentence then they should stay in prison for there life. Why call it that if you aren't going to give them that?

Well yeah. I mean, technically, you shouldn't be able to get off it unless you are found not to be guilty of the crime that brought about that conviction.

Life should mean life or what is the point of sentencing them to 'life' in prison? Criminals know they can get out in only a few years. We're way too soft...

We also put people away for consenting underage sex (damaging but a completely different debate) for 6 years because one parent has decided to press charges (normally against the boy...). But then a murderer could get life and be out in 4 years! It's terrible!

Currently I don't think it should be called a life sentence, 20 - 25 years is not life. Life should mean life, if you take a life you should lose all of your liberty and stay in prison for life.

I'm tired of people getting out of jail when they've been given a life sentence... Except in the Shawshank Redemption... Good movie...

I only agree life should mean life on certain issues. This may sound crazy but i don't always agree someone who has killed should be given life. Murder generally tends to have a motive and a substantial reason. However, i believe rapists and child molesters should receive life! They have no motive and no excuse for what they do.

Although I'm not a harsh punishment mindset I certainly do agree in principle that a "life" sentence should mean life. If it doesn't mean life then they shouldn't call it that. It's as silly as a "death" sentence meaning lock them up 20 years and then let them go - that wouldn't be death now would it?

They should call a "life" sentence something else or make it last for life. And frankly all the sentencing guidelines need to be rethought anyway because they're very inconsistent.

The life sentence give no incentive for good behaviour, no incentive for rehabilitation, nothing. Life Sentence fulfils only 1, perhaps two of the 3 reasons we imprison. They are: Punishment, Deterrent, Rehabilitation. By having a life sentence without parole you add on the first but totally disregard the last. I am not prepared to give up on anyone like that. Once someone has been in prison for some years, if they are no threat to society they have no reason to still be there.
