Most people believe it was invented by Americans. It was only commercialised by them. It originally started off in CERN in Geneva, Switzerland for a way for Scientists to trade and send information rapidly. Yes the same place with the LHC.

The internet is not only greatest form of media but it also a way for people to get different views and opinions. The mass media tends to follow a popular story and do not talk about some of the more important issues facing average people. On the internet, you can visit blog, video blogs and other forms of opinion, something ABC,FOX,NBC,MSNBC, and CNN lack terribly.

All other forms of media are on the Internet these days, so of course it is the greatest form of media.

The Internet is responsible for the globalization of society. Can radio or magazines say that? Nope.

I agree. The Internet is all of humankind's' (I'm trying to be non-sexist) greatest achievements rolled into one: TV, radio, written media, and is extremely easy to search for, access and browse through. Granted, hackers and viruses are everywhere, as are phony sites, but today's antivirus, firewall and anti-scam applications are more than capable than repelling and defending against these threats.

Although I still never trust anything from a not-well-known site, the Net is easily the Greatest Form of Media in the world.

Yes. All other forms of media require the person using them to be a passive absorber of information. There is no participation. With the Internet, on the other hand, a person actively seeks out information and can share or comment on what he or she discovers. The experience is essentially participatory and, ultimately, expressive of the person's own character.

With the rise to mass popularity of the World Wide Web, information has been liberated from the high priests who once guarded it. Yes, there is a lot of junk out there too. But that's human nature, and anyone surfing the Internet will quickly become aware of the fact that not all information is to be trusted, causing them to develop critical faculties, probably to a much greater extent than was the case with traditional media, which most people implicitly assume are trustworthy.

The Internet is no doubt a very remarkable form of media. It not just saves a lot of time it also provides limitless information on any topic you require. Information on the Internet is available in any format you are comfortable with and this makes it user friendly. It can not be ignored that Internet has a lot of cons as well but the fact that its pros are outweighing the cons proves the worth of the medium.

Internet is definitely is a greatest form of media; because it covers every aspect of print (newspaper, magazine), electronic (television and radio) and communication devices(emails, telephone). For example. You can watch Television on Internet, make phone calls, read newspapers, and send emails and what not. Internet is faster, saves time and convenient for advertisement, communication and businesses.
It’s great for people whose social life is restricted to para social interactions. From entertainment to education or from socializing to chatting can be done through Internet. Everything is available on one click, whether it’s shopping or banking. Today world is moving at high pace whether its technology or education. Internet is using technology to make everything so easy and electronic (like e-banking, e-commerce etc); making everything cheaper from any other of media, download free music or movies, call at lowest rates, whereas you can read as many newspaper as you want at the price of one.
Internet can be use to buy tickets, seeking job opportunities, collect information on any topic and do whatever one wants while taking some precautionary measures like: Avoid giving personal details, try and stop spamming, gain knowledge about viruses to avoid them affecting your computer and use parental control to stop the use of pornography. However, the advantages of Internet outweigh the disadvantages of it.

I agree. The Internet is extremely useful. There are disadvantages, such as banning and adult sites, but this kind of stuff can appear in other media as well. People can be conned with any media, such as with phone lines on the television or piracy in cinemas.

The Internet is safe if you choose to use it in a safe way. If you're careful with who you choose to give your personal details to and avoid talking to people who you are suspicious of, then you can make the Internet safe for yourself and enjoy all the benefits that it has to offer.

The Internet has some excellent sites such as Friends Reunited and other social networking sites which can help us trace friends and lost members of our family, something which would be very difficult to do otherwise.

There is nothing wrong with chatting online, as long as you are careful and do not spend most of your time doing it. As for viruses, there are virus protection packages that you can purchase to protect your computer.

The Internet is also extremely useful in terms of jobs, as more and more opportunities are being made available for people who wish to work freelance and there are some great sites which can help you to promote your work, such as your artwork or your writing.

The Internet is the greatest communication system, and within it the types of applications (web, instant messaging, video, email etc) make it the best form of media.

I totally agree with your comments. Internet has made this world a global village and we have an easy and quick access to the material we need. Internet is being used in the whole world for the following purposes;

• Research
• Online Education
• Business
• Online Selling & Purchasing
• Online Banking Transactions
• Communication
• Enjoyment
• Online Employment etc

So Internet is the greatest media and it has brought radical changes in our life.

Hoo, boy -- anyone who is a member of the non-Internet media will tell you how fallacious this is!
In my 30-year journalism career, the No. 1 thing new reporters are taught is “Never implicitly believe anything you read online.” Why: Because it is entirely unsubstantiated.
The print media’s Bible (in the U.S.), the Associated Press Stylebook, warns, “ The Web is a sprawling databank that’s one-quarter wheat and three-quarters chaff. Any information you find should be assessed with the same care that you use for everything else.”
Writers must check to see who is sponsoring a Net page, if the domain type is appropriate for the info provided, that the source of the info is clearly stated, and to look for obvious bias.
The trend now is get rid of pesky, skeptical, questioning reporters and just supply readers with news gleaned from online sources. This is scary and dangerous.

Pesky, sceptical questioning reporters? You mean those journalists who exposed the stolen elections of 2000 and 2004, stopped a new war in Iraq from occurring by revealing the Bush administration's deceptive WMD propaganda, cast a harsh light on the Bushies cover-up of 9/11, and brought down the Bush presidency by reporting on the adminstration's numerous violations of international and domestic law? No, you can't mean those reporters because those reporters don't exist.

The internet is an excellent source, as long as you're looking at a 100% credible site. (BBC, CNN, Fox News, etc.) But until there is a way to make sure there is no false info, hacked data and other things, I will prefer a good old newspaper or magazine.

No, the Internet is not the best form media. The one good thing about it is that it is a place that all of the world is represented. Bad is that not all posted information, even if it looks like it is true, is not true and there misinformation that is strongly misleading. People using it can lie to get their candidate elected and can be extremely destructive to innocent people. Can allow pedophiles to harm children. Can allow terrorists, nazis, cults, and other damaging groups to communicate and sprew their 'gospel.' No, until there is a way to rate such things, and more, on the Internet like movies are rated, it is definitely not the best...at least NOT in the free world.

I'm curious about your argument. When you mention that the information there is untrue and is strongly misleading, cant that concept be applied to all forms of media? Lets take Television for example. You cant honestly tell me that you believe every news anchor or journalist is telling the truth about their candidate and not misleading the public? FOX news comes to mind whenever I think about misleading the public. Though I do agree with you that the 'bad' people can spread their influence, but information is just a tool and there are many, many more 'good' people trying to spread their influence. Would you ban pain killers because a few bad people abuse it? Now if the only way the internet can truly be great is through regulation, then you take away the one thing that truly makes it great, its near-unlimited source of information. Then I gotta ask you, who does the regulating? Lets take another example, I find beating a woman seriously offensive, like many of us here I hope. Would you block all websites relating to the Koran? We can use almost any example here but what it boils down to is if you regulate what can be said, is there such a thing as a free world?

The Internet is one of the best forms of media but I wouldn't vote it the best.

I think that television news coverage for example is excellent. We can have live coverage , verbally and visually conveyed as events are taking place around the world and the quality of , for example, of the BBC news is wonderful.
Radio is another excellent form of media. Stations such as the world service, Radio Four and local radio stations bring programmes of all sorts into our lives without having to have a PC available.
Yes the Internet can bring all sorts of things to us but it can be abused and it's difficult to monitor what goes on the Internet , it's easier to control standards on the television and radio.
The Internet isn't easy for all to access. It's cheaper to buy a radio or television than a PC and pay a monthly broadband charge. Certain age groups, for example older people tend to have fewer PC's available to them.
Television and radio have such a wide range of programmes such as debates, politics, sport, shopping channels it makes them hard to beat.
I think that I'd have to say that whilst being great , the Internets not the best.

The Internet certainly is an excellent means of communication and for gathering information, music, news, etc it's second to none. However, I don't believe that it is the greatest media.

The Internet is an almost lawless environment, like the border towns of the American frontier. Practically anything can happen without a kind of law enforcement. For this reason I believe that the Internet has increased the number of possibilities for criminals. Using the Internet, criminals can hack, phish, con, not to mention offenders who groom children on the Internet and then try to meet up with them. Stealing your personal information has never been so convenient for criminals, it has created a whole new area of crime that law enforcement teams across the world were slow to counter.

The Internet has encouraged people to be lazy. Rather than walking to the shops to buy something, they simply click a button. Convenient yes, but ultimately lazy.

The access to information is certainly second to none, but it has decreased the need for books. What's more, reading things on the Internet is not as much fun as holding the actual book in your hands.

As to whether the Internet is the Greatest of all media depends on how you weight the media against the Internet. The television is certainly an amazing thing, it is also great for accessing information, entertainment from across the world, films, documentaries, music, comedy etc. It is not as diverse as the Internet but only because the limitations are different.

Personally, I still think film, which has the power to make me laugh and cry is still the best for me because the Internet may be amazing, but it's never made me feel anything. Whereas I have come out of films inspired or moved.

I was respecting your argument up until the second paragraph... I mean c'mon.... The Internet encouraged people to be lazy? Sure... of course it does... but all technology does really. Lets get rid of fast food while were at it. Microwaves... bleh, lets go back to cooking food. While were at it, lets get rid of cars. Bikes for everyone. And as for "reading things on the internet is not as much fun as holding the actual book in your hands" yeah you got me there... I love books. But should personal preference really qualify as a reason to say that something is not great? Does Coca-Cola suck because you like Pepsi more? No, it just means you like Pepsi more.

As for films, they're great too. I remember watching some movie where they had a cut-scene of a beach... Then I went home, googled how to body surf, went to the beach and did it. The Internet may have never moved you in any special way, but its moved me enough to research anything I ever wanted to try in life, and then helped me to plan out how I was gonna do it... but once again, personal preference.

Although the Internet provides us with lots of information and other benefits, its negative impacts can't be ignored:

1- People are misusing the Internet and providing incorrect information, just so they can get money.
2- Pornography and other adult websites are spoiling it for people, especially kids.
3- Negative minded people send viruses out, just for fun.
4- Students are wasting their precious time, online chatting and things like that.
5- Hacking of data is very common on the Internet.

So, nothing is secure out there. Therefore, the Internet is not that great of a media unless these things are removed.

#1... wait... what? You mean like the Scam Letters? A scam is a scam, whether it is online with Mr.Farooq Q. Albadhar the Prince of Nigeria who wants you to inherit his fortune to the winning lotto ticket scam that so many people have fallen for.
#2 Hahaha kids... Was it that long ago when Playboy was corrupting the youth? What exactly are you spoiling if you dont mind me asking hahaha
#3 Those bastards... They also give you a bad attitude when you talk to them in real life. Dont associate with negative minded people. Dont open strange emails, dont talk to strangers... Dont go to bad websites...
#4 Yeah stop them from wasting time.... turn on the the TV instead.
#5 Robberies are very common on the streets as well. So are shootings and gang violence depending on where you're from.
