The Great Lakes Basin contains the largest body of fresh water in the world, holding 18 percent of
the world's fresh surface water. It drains 288,000 square miles and covers 95,000 square miles. It
also provides a home for a variety of fish and wildlife, as well as shelter for migratory birds. Of
late, this ecosystem has been endangered for various reasons. It is very important that this
ecosystem be protected at all costs. The reasons are many. It is the largest source of fresh water
in the world. It is the habitat of unique species of wildlife and fish, and the loss of those would
be incalculable. A large area of the surrounding territory depends upon this ecosystem; destruction
of it would harm those areas too. At the same time, the destruction of such a large ecosystem would
alter the ecological balance of the whole world. |
