The vast majority of Tibetans had no rights whatsoever before Chinese rule. They did not even have
the right to own land. They would be taxed for almost everything they did : Taxed if they had a
baby, taxed if they planted a tree, taxed if they wanted to dance. They could not get married
without the permission of their masters and their families could be broken up on the whim of their
rulers.
The religion preached by the monks was designed to perpetuate their own rule. Because of the belief
in reincarnation and karma, it was preached that misery in this life was the result of sin in a
previous life; happiness in this life was the result of virtue in a previous life. It's hard to
think of a religious system which more completely enshrines an unequal status quo.
Children, both male and female, were taken from their parents to become the sexual playthings of the
so-called monks. The monks employed mutilation as a deliberate tactic. Anyone who criticised them
would be mutilated. They even had special devices designed to cut off noses and ears and hands.
People like Richard Gere have cultivated an unrealistic image of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. The
truth is the rule of the lamas in Tibet was savage and despotic. The image of the Dalai Lama as Yoda
made flesh is absurd. Did you know that, even in exile, there has been violent conflict between the
different factions of Tibetan Buddhism? Did you know that the Dalai Lama, the so-called man of
peace, endorsed the Iraq war? That he called for Britain to release the Chilean dictator Augusto
Pinochet rather than send him to be prosecuted?
The vast majority of Tibetans welcomed the advent of Chinese rule because it freed them from a era
of savage oppression. This is why, when the CIA sent in some Tibetan exiles (from the displaced
ruling class) to instigate a revolt in Tibet, it met with no success. The people would not join it
because they knew what the return of the theocracy meant. |

The TIbetan Occupation by the Peoples Liberation Army is not a good thing.
The Tibetans hate China's occupation, thus the numerous revolts. China has had a history of human
rights violations, as demonstrated in the Tian An Men protest in 1989. China has no right to be
there, as well as Mongolia and Taiwan. The Tibetans are violently suppressed when no one is looking.
The only reason that is not the case now is because of all the media coverage.
Tibetans are now refugees by the hundreds of thousands in India. The Chinese have always been
conquering 'lesser' people than themselves. The Peoples Republic of China is just in Tibet for the
Iron ore. |

Arguing that Communist China chased out "barbarism" from Tibet when it invaded this defenceless land
is tantamount to claiming that the Soviet Union did a world of good when it marched into Eastern
Europe, imposed radical industrialization, purged all opponents and collectivized farms, simply
because it also happened to stamp out the agrarian, semi-feudal socio-economic system that existed
just about everywhere at the same time. Claiming that China "freed Tibet from barbarism" is just as
spurious as arguing that Europeans liberated North American Natives from their barbarism, that the
Belgians brought productivity to the Congo and that the British Empire civilized the non-western
world.
The Chinese Red Guard wiped out centuries of Tibetan history by destroying around 6,000 monasteries,
Buddhist monks were either massacred or expelled and the number of civilian deaths in the 1950s
alone stands at well above 87,000, even if precise figures are hard to come by.
The Parenti article amounts to shameful apologetics and a verbal drive-by shooting of Buddhism. Too
bad for the author and others who either openly or covertly applaud Communist imperialism (mainly
because it tends to purge religious institutions) that such "thoughtful" pieces are based on totally
eclectic sources. Parenti's list of names of people who the Dalai Lama has been seen with is
especially bizarre. I'm not sure if this is guilt by association, but if it is, then I fail to see
why we must all gasp in horror that he accepted money from George Soros. |

Wow, do you also believe that living in Franco’s Spain or Stain’s Russia was superior because
there was less crime?
This argument is that colonialism saves “lesser” people from themselves. People have the right
to self-determination, even if their values appear “medieval” or ”barbaric.”
This is the worst kind of cultural chauvinism. Why should a superior power have the right to impose
its standards on a sovereign people? China should look in the mirror before it tries to
“civilize” Tibet. China is the whipping boy of the West because ITS practices are considered
corrupt and inhumane.
Ask an American Indian if his tribe is better off now than when traders and missionaries arrived to
“civilize” them with consumerism and Christianity.
Everyone knows that, just like Bush and bringing democracy to the Iraqis, China is not subduing
Tibet to save it from barbarism. Rather, it is a simple grab of resources. |
