Something like this would not surprise me in the least. Bush is an idiot who would do anything to
keep the war going in Iraq. We have no reason to be there. Sadam is dead, Bin Laden is no where near
Iraq. What is the purpose for being there? It is Bushes hobby. The US will be doomed if another
stupid Republican gets in office. They only care about Iraq. Meanwhile back home, all the American
people are losing their homes, their jobs and their lives. No one can afford health care or anything
else. The economy is failing and the Republicans could care less. Americans cannot even afford to
leave home anymore. (That is, if they have a home). Republicans are idiots. America will go under if
McCain wins. |

This may seem like a sound election strategy in most cases, since voters do often rally around the
incumbent (or in this case his successor) during a time of war or crisis. Nevertheless, I am not
sure that this strategy would work so well for McCain. The Republicans will probably weigh a few
factors before attacking Iran.
McCain probably realizes that an attack on Iran would not serve him well in this election. Much of
McCain's campaign is riding on the relative success of the current troop surge in Iraq. The
Republican presidential candidate can take some credit (and often does) for suggesting a surge last
summer, when this option was hugely unpopular. At first, his campaign paid dearly and it appeared
that he was doomed. Later, however, the surge appeared to have decreased violence in Iraq, even if
it has not been able to eliminate it altogether. If the US were to attack Iran, there is no way that
it would be able to maintain its troop levels in Iraq, which would likely lead to a deterioration of
the situation there as well. This would not be helpful to McCain's campaign.
I suspect that the Republicans also realize that even a very limited aerial assault on a handful of
targets in Iran would lead to an Iranian response, and this may open up a whole new Pandora's Box.
Tehran may fire rockets at Israel or it may try to cause havoc in Iraq. Either way, the US is not in
the best economic and military position to fight another war at the moment and the Republicans
probably realize this. I would not, however, be surprised if an open conflict with Iran breaks out
in the near future, but probably after the election. |
