I'm not sure if its a good way to raise money for a healthy America, but I think the reason why
people buy the fatty stuff is because its cheap. Healthy foods always cost more and for someone who
is on a tight budget, I know that I buy the cheaper foods, which just so happen to be worse for you,
simply because they're cheap. If those cheap foods weren't as cheap, people would probably make
better decisions about what they were eating. |

I can't claim to know anything about taxes nor what is a good item to tax. I am sure that this idea
has its drawbacks, but for now, I am for it. |

First, although I've been quiet lately I'm not gone. Just taking a break. But I felt a need to
comment on this one...
Second, let's assess your argument. Taxing something higher because it is unhealthy is fine. We
tax cigarettes and alcohol higher for exactly that reason. I'm not against taxing what is
unhealthy. But to simply say tax fatty foods is wrong. There are good fats (olive oil, avocados,
even fat in many of our meats) and unhealthy fats (partially hydrogenated oils, deep fat fried
foods, etc) and you have to differentiate and carefully define the letter of the law or you can
actually make people sicker by making fats expensive. Healthy fats will actually lower your
cholesterol, some improve your vasculature and heart, many are great food for the brain. Fat in
food is not automatically bad. Furthermore, my experience in my own diet is eliminating grain carbs
goes much further to achieving healthy weight than eliminating fats. I've dropped over 40 pounds
and not from cutting the fats, from cutting the grains (and also from hitting the gym). Ironically
putting your higher tax on pasta, bread, rice, etc, actually could be more effective than putting it
on fats. |

I think we should tax skinny people for not spending enough money on food and, therefore, not
contributing enough to the economy. |

I'm really not a tax type of person, we have way too many taxes already. The simple thing to do is
just let the natural consequences happen. For example, fat people require more health care,
therefore, their premiums should be higher. The airlines are starting to do the right thing, by
charging for two seats after a certain level of obesity. Employers should be allowed to
discriminate on the basis of obesity if the job demands a more fit person. Things like that would
work better, I think. |

Taxing 'FAT AMERICANS' would be a far better way to raise some cash. Fat people take up more room on
buses, trains, planes, AND YOU NEED LOADS MORE FUEL TO MOVE THEM.... Why shouldn't they be taxed
more. They would soon start losing weight if a fat tax was invented. |
