Bearing in mind the never ending list of stealth taxes we have to pay, yes we are taxed too much. I
wouldn't mind so much if it was an upfront income tax that we could all understand. At the moment
unless you earn serious money you have very little left after Mr Brown has got his filthy mitts on
it and all the bills have been paid.
I also wouldn't mind so much if the government didn't waste so much of of it and actually put it to
proper use. |

I'd say tax in the UK is fairly reasonable. If anything, it needs to be increased. The only thing I
object to is the high value of stealth taxes such as Value Added Tax. In most cases, people just see
the sticker prices of the products they pay for. They don't really know how much is tax and how much
is the underlying cost of the product.
Because the level of income tax has become a political football in Britain for the last 20 years or
so, politicians are extremely loath to increase it. If they need to raise revenue, they do it by
some other way, such as by raising VAT. Gordon Brown, in his time as chancellor, pursued this
stealthy, and fundamentally dishonest, approach to taxation.
The problem with VAT is its regressive nature. It affects the poorest people disproportionately
compared to an income tax. So Brown's tax policies have favoured the rich at the expense of the
poor. In my opinion, VAT should be reduced, and possibly income tax at the lowest brackets too,
while income tax should be increased on the wealthiest people. |
