Tapping is so simple but so effective, it makes it sound like your really hardcore shreading when
your just doing a few simple taps and pull offs. I've just learned how to do it and i was surprised
how much can be done with it.
I'm torn - but I'll respond to the argument point. It is cool. For those who don't play guitar to
see someone tapping onstage is cool to see. It can be impressive. But unfortunately it can also be
overdone.
I agree also that it is other guitar players who get "sniffy" about it. They see a guitar solo that
employs tapping as somehow soulless. I disagree with that - EVH is a case in point. He backs up his
very underrated rhythym playing with wonderfully soulful guitar solos using every trick in the book
(that he invented).
I think that people are sniffy about tapping. It may be relatively easy but it incorporates fast
hand action, and can be played on bass as seen by Victor Wooten. It is one of the many cool ways to
play the guitar.
I tap on my bass. I tap harmonics too. I just do general tapping on my guitar. I'm an amateur at guitar (only started in January!) but I try to learn anything I can. Try tapping with a wah pedal. It's amazing.
The guy doesn't seem that great to me. Stanley Jordan does tapping with both hands, playing the
guitar almost like a keyboard. He's on a different planet from the guy in the video. Ultimately,
though, it's the music that matters, not the technique. Technique should only be a means to an end,
and I'd rather hear fine music played by someone two-tracking than I would lower quality music
played by someone performing finger gymnastics to try and do it all at once.
Tapping becomes old. Fast. It's involves skill and is impressive however you can't incorporate much
else with it, it's pure showboating, as Buckethead and etc. Have shown: It gets repetitive.
I disagree. Although tapping was great back in the 80s when it was pioneered by Eddie Van Halen I
think that now people opt for it simply to sound good because it is an easy way of cramming lots of
notes into a short space of time. I have been playing electric guitar since I was 11 and tapping was
the first 'advanced' technique i mastered but i rarely use it because it is associated with shred
and I prefer blues solos with soul.
