The band Styx (originally called The Tradewinds) is the best alternative techno rock band ever. They are probably the only one to have a lot of success.
Hey man, there greatest hits CD is awesome. My favorite songs of theirs are Renegade, Blue Collar Man, and Come Sail Away. (that last one is kind of a cheezy love song with a pretty good beat that picks up near the end)
There were really 2 versions of Styx: The hard-rocking version ("Renegade") which was guitarist
Tommy Shaw's style, and the techno-art version, which came from singer Dennis DeYoung. They
constantly battled over which direction to take the group and that's what destroyed the group. I'm
voting on this side because Styx's best work was of the Tommy Shaw variety, and because The Alan
Parsons Project was MUCH better at techno-art.
They had some good songs back in the 1970s and until "Paradise Theatre", but they should have been
shot for making "Mr. Roboto". April Wine had more and better songs.
Styx had only enough good songs to fill one greatest hits album, or "PT" alone and nothing else.
They weren't that good, although they did help bring hard rock and the "twin guitar attack" into the
mainstream.
And for the record, groups should call it a day when key members leave the band. Styx without
Dennis DeYoung is like Iron Maiden without Bruce Dickinson or Steve Harris.
I agree with the Mr. Roboto thing, but you can't compare them to April Wine. Renegade blows every song they made out of the water. They only had one greatest hits album because they knew when to call it quits.
