The UK Should Have Nuclear Power
In order to combat Climate Change, I think we should have Nuclear Power in the UK. Whilst we should maximise the use of sustainable energy sources (such as; wind, tidal, solar etc), I don't believe that we can implement the required number of these alternatives soon enough to address the Climate Change problem. In respect of the question of whether it is safe - I think that we have enough experience of them to avert any accidents occurring.

I feel that nuclear power should be available for use to combat climate change in the U.K. As global warming is showing signs of havoc, not only are people going to suffer from diseases caused by excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere .If the earth is not protected by them how will we people depend upon it for sustenance. Nuclear power and its energy saves us from global warming intolerable heat waves and rise in sea levels can be kept in check to a certain degree with its nuclear energy source which will be safe for human civilization to follow. This is why I feel that O.K. Should have nuclear power .Climatic catastrophe is occurring due to gases and temperatures are rising. Acceleration of global warming in the O.K. Needs immediate attention and if nuclear power is there in the U.K. It will be beneficial.

Well here's a guy who sticks his head in his own personal sand..

chernobyl was most certainly not in the UK yet we still had to deal with the fall out, radioactive particles do not respect borders..

And these places always leak one way or another, these leaks are covered up but there is no way you can keep that amount of nuclear material and not have some leaks..

The nuclear meltdown provoked a radioactive cloud that floated not over just Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova, but also the European part of Turkey, Macedonia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, The Netherlands, Belgium, Slovenia, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, France (including Corsica) the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man, and even part of the United States as well.

No one is thrilled by the idea of having nuclear power stations near them. There is the suggested link with cancer and, of course, the danger of an accident; but I agree with you that the ecological and energy resource situation on the planet is so critical that we should be seriously ramping up our use of nuclear power.

Global warming is approaching the tipping points which will make it irreversible. Whatever the risks from nuclear power are, they are nowhere near those of global warming. And even apart from the polluting effects of our use of coal and oil is the fact that our supplies of them are running out. Oil is already at $100 a barrel and the industrialization of China and India means demand for it is only going to increase.

Even James Love lock, noted environmentalist and author of the Gaia hypothesis, has now come out in favor of nuclear power. At this stage, it's the only responsible choice to make.

In an ideal world, yes i would agree with you, but it's not. Cars, trains, planes, crash, they shouldn't do, but they due mainly due to human error and it's that factor alone you can not allow for. you can have all the safety measures man can think of put into place, but there is always that possibility ever present, and the possible after effects don't bear thinking about. Added to the fact it takes 25 years+ to de-commision a nuclear plant after it has stopped producing power, the costs alone are prohibitive.

When i think of nuclear power i think of Chernobyl
and the nuclear waste that comes from it is very bad for the environment

Having seen the results from what can happen due to human error, either by bad work practices or bad design issues, i am not in favour of nuclear power.
If there is a major problem with conventional power stations, yes a lot of people could die or get injured ,due to it's immediate affects, but if a nuclear power station, how ever remote that possibility may be, goes up, millions of people may be affected, thousands of miles away, in different countries.
It's just too dangerous, and i have not even got to it's by products, storage, transporting nuclear materials, terrorists etc.

With new and more powerful green technologies being discovered just months apart I think that if we focus our resources we will not only meet our power needs faster but in the long run cheaper and we won't have the health risk or have to put more toxic waste into the environment
