Teachers Should Be Able To Have Relationships With Students
No because teachers are older.

IF we are talking college-age, yes, but younger? No.

It all depends upon the actual ages of each.

Yes.
Yes.
Nobody should be held back if they love each other.

It is a right to be able to love who we wish.
(It might not be , i just made that up)

Yes, because its no different to a young secretary dating her older boss. Teachers and students see each other every day for years, they get to know each other pretty well, so it is inevitable that if they are flirty, they will become attracted to one another. You cannot stop it from happening especially as school kids are becoming sexual at a younger age than ever before.

A young secretary is usually an adult. An older student is still a child - even when they get into college, they are still just kids who are hopefully learning and maturing into adults. They can call themselves one once they move out and live on their own salaries with no help from Mom and Dad.

And you CAN stop it from happening...it's called "restraint". Having that and understanding that only comes with maturity - not necessarily age.

Well it depends. What kind of teacher? Is it me taking Karate lessons from a man of similar age? In which case yes it's ok.

Or is it in a professional environment where students are much younger than the teacher/or are under say 18yrs...there are prof boundaries in any job, if you are in a position of authority you shouldn't have a relationship with a student-if you are not in a position of authority...eg: Karate teacher, private language teacher etc...then it's ok!

Depending on the ages of the teacher vs his/her student, I would agree to it.
I met a female teacher, years ago; I was 38 and she was thirty something. She was teaching part time and I was studying part time too. Two consenting adults, no conflict of interest, and we were very quiet about it. So, what was wrong with that ?
Stop being holier than the Pope and live !
PS: I"m not talking about a 14-yr old girl having a crush on her male teacher of 32 !

It depends on what kind of relationship. I had a good meeting once before with my ex-teacher and my ex-classmates. I was happy, because they were fine.

Would you care to clarify whether or not these are elementary students or college students and what type of relationship you're talking about? In any case, I feel the relationship should be kept professional as to not conflict with the student's ability to learn.

This would only be acceptable if its a mature student, say over the age of twenty. Otherwise this is unacceptable and the teacher would be abusing there power and the position of trust they have been given.

A student and teacher relationship should go no further than the school gates (unless it's a field trip).

No, students are children, teachers are adults. Age does not equate maturity. Teachers who allow this should be held criminally liable. No matter if they are male or female.

While many unions of teachers and students do succeed, it is in general a very poor practice. Indeed, that is why it is illegal in most jurisdictions.
The issues here are favoritism and exploitation of power. Just like relationships between clergymen/parishioners and therapists/patients, those between teachers/students are inappropriate because the person in power has too strong a hold over the person he or she is sworn to serve.
We all know that college students “screw” professors to get better grades. It is highly unethical for the teacher to participate in that -- but they do.
As for lower-grade relationships, this is just unthinkable. Any male teacher who cannot keep his pants zipped in the face of a teen Lolita needs to be stripped of his teaching license. In my state, a woman was recently sent to prison for screwing (and eventually having the child of ) her 14-year-old male student.

No way. Teachers should never date students. No matter what the age different is, teachers should never date or develop relationships with their present or past students. It is unprofessional and unethical. Teachers have a job to do and that is to teach students, not sleep with them. Any teacher who dates a student should be fired and never allowed to teach again. It breaks the trust between students and teachers and it also breaks the trust that parents have for the teachers. Parents should be able to sue a teacher who tries to date their child. There are plenty of people out there that the teacher could date. He/she does not need their students.

It's not the age that is the point;

It's that the teachers are in a position of trust and having any kind of relationship other than friendship with a student is extremely unprofessional and breaches the trust parents have in them.
