Schools Should Have Surveillance Cameras
I think yes because you feel safer and can depend on them when something is stolen.

If you have nothing to hide cameras are OK :)

What is somebody gets into the school without being caught and is very dangerous, what is any random student was just walking and saw that person and got killed. You will be more safe, Since you say that you are being watched and all of that. Would rather get hurt or being watched for and be safe. What is something bad happens to you, nobody knows. But since there was a camera, they can see you, so they send help

It is good because it prevents most of the crimes or people would know who did it

Course they should. The technology exists. It is enough of a reason to protect the kids as it is to protect the teachers. A teacher aren't be in a room alone with any child, with the door shut. It stands to reason.

It's sad that they are necessary, but they are in many schools. Students who are bullied or stolen from need to be protected, as well as protecting school property. With taped footage that shows a kid stealing or damaging school property, the proof is there to back the accusations. It also protects kids who are innocent, but who are accused because they aren't liked. I see a lot of concern over areas such as changing areas and the bathroom. That is illegal, so no one need worry about that happening at school. If it did, the school would face a lot of problems. I do think a same sex teacher or volunteer could monitor these locations though. Again, there are safety issues along with the need to guard against theft. Some kids are bullied and there was a recent report of a 17 year old killing himself after a huge amount of bullying was not taken seriously enough by the staff at his school. The bullies told him something to the effect that he should just go home and kill himself. Well, he did just that. Despite his crying, no school official came to his aid. That's a tragedy and totally irresponsible on the part of the school that the boy went to. Some schools also have problems with drug use at school. I find this to be totally unacceptable. As a parent, I do not want my children in that environment. My girls are not ones who would, at this time, try a drug. They know that I would test them if I had even the smallest concern about that and they are very open about things like that with me. Other kids aren't as strong and do not resist peer pressure as well. How many children become addicts because they try a drug at a young age? What seems harmless at a young age and considered to be experimentation, is not so harmless. Some people have addiction problems. Some kids are addicted after "trying" a drug at a young age. I'm not paranoid about these issues. I have read the statistics and my concerns are those of just wanting kids to have an education in a safe and comfortable atmosphere. If there was a zero tolerance rule for some offenses, the kids who are more likely to bring problems to school would start to think twice after seeing a few kids expelled and sent to a correctional school, not just getting a vacation (suspension). If the parents don't punish kids for being suspended, it seems to me like a punishment that lots of kids would actually enjoy, unless it is an in school suspension. That isn't even much of a punishment for some of the things that go on in even elementary schools sometimes. Kids should be allowed to have their innocence and enjoy a stable and safe environment at school.

But they only place where stuff gets stolen is in CHANGING ROOMS bcos of not being monitored. so there wouldn't be any point in putting them else where, so they only place that would b useful is the pe changing room. and if its illegal then the they don't put it there which means that there is still theft, so that would waste a lot of money. full stop

You have to be reasonable. Not in obscene places like the shower room. But hallways and such, sure I don't see the issue.

I knew a school where no kids locked any lockers and they all trusted each other. It had such good kids. I was kinda jealous and wanted to go there. It was the difference between some ghetto school with guns and perfect sanctuary.

That's how my school was. It was a small private school run on the honor system. We did not even have lockers with doors. If anyone did steal anything and only one did, they were immediately expelled for stealing an ice cream bar. No nonsense or second chances. Some things were considered to be a one shot deal....stealing was one such offense.

I am trying to get my kids out of the public schools they are in. My youngest has had many things stolen by a couple of kids in her class. They are dumb enough to tell people about the theft, thankfully. She has gotten most of her stuff back. Normally, I don't let her take valuable things to school, but she does need her cell phone because of a health issue. I feel safer knowing it's on her if she ends up alone in a restroom and has a problem. It's a seizure disorder and she would probably not be able to walk for help after a seizure. It takes her a while to gain full control of her muscles after one.

This problem could be avoided with cameras at the lockers. These kids seem to be totally aware of how to stalk someone who has not locked their locker and take full advantage of the situation. Some kids don't lock their gym lockers and they are stolen from.

I agree, cameras should not be in certain places. In places where kids are changing is definitely one of them. I do think increased teacher presence is called for. A same sex teacher monitoring them would be a help, but it's a shame for the kids who do not need to be constantly watched. Still, it's better than having expensive things like cell phones and i-Pods stolen along with any money the kids might have to buy something like a yearbook or to put in their lunch account. I don't let her take her i-Pod. Some kids do bring theirs to school and I don't really see why. They can't listen to them and it's not worth the risk of having them stolen for the bus ride to and from school. It is a shame that it has to be that way, but until these thefts are taken seriously and kids are expelled and sent to a school for kids with behavior and conduct problems, it will likely continue.

I don't think that schools should put up surveillance cameras especially not in the bathrooms or the pe locker / changing room! What doesn't the school trust the students enough to not have surveillance cameras in school. Well I can see them in the hallways and classrooms, but really not anywhere else, or else that would be just plain wrong and gross.

What does that tell us about the school if things keep getting stolen?! And if peoples things are so valuable they shouldn't bring them to school or look after them better! Huh...

I'm not cos what if we wanted privacy! I mean imagine it in the toilets, or in the pe changing room. Stuff gets stolen mostly in the changing room so they would put it in there and perv on us getting changed!

They cannot legally put any cameras in the changing rooms, but there is no reason that a teacher or other adult cannot monitor these areas to keep theft at a minimum. Parents don't want to and should not have to replace things that some other child cannot seem to resist taking from our kids. It's not fair to the parents or the children. Not only that, but kids who are engaging in theft at such young ages are not learning anything positive to deter them if they are not caught and dealt with. Some parents don't teach their kids the same values that most do. These kids would stand a better chance in life if they were caught and punished.
