Rap Music Should Be Banned From The Radio
Rap music today contains a lot of negative, foul, offensive, and controversial words and phrases. Should this type of music be banned from the radio so that children will not be exposed to it?

In my personal opinion, I never liked rap music. To me, rap music and rap artists have lost their focus on what music is suppose to be about. All of it involves day to day fantasies, some real life experiences, raining champagne in the clubs on tits, influence people to do things that they shouldn't do, etc., I could go on for days. If rap music talked about positive things, and uplifting people, then I am for it to stay on the radio. Until then, it will continue to get worse and worse. I just could wonder how the rap music will sound 10 years from now, if it still exists.....more likely it will. Negative energy sticks and spreads more than positive energy....so sad.

Yes. I like a nice fraction of it. But most is garbage and repetitive. And boring. Know what boring is? When you numb up to things, and that ain't hard when it is repetitive.

But I do like a nice fraction of it. There is skill to be had in many areas.

Rap is garbage!! For every rap "artist" that makes it, there is a million other people out there trying to. These people would rather talk about nothing to music that is normally not thier's than actually getting a job and contribute to society.

Beatles can get outta my face. And so can Zeppelin. But I am what some would say... a disturbed youth. And my response would be to smack whoever would say that. That's what I learned from rap music!

Yes, it corrupts youth. People say Tupac and Biggie rapped about real issues, but they didn't.

You should look at an interesting book called "The Hidden Messages in Water"
It shows different things that affect water, both good and bad, things that change the very crystaline structure of water.
It shows experiments that made bad water turn good and good water turn bad.
SORRY, rap music turned the water bad.
Your body is made up of mostly water, so it affects you that way too.
No matter what you like or dislike. And the experiments were done in double blind studies.....turned out the same EVERY time.
P.S. It's not the lyrics it's the music itself.

I half agree. I'm not a fan of rap, thanks to the foul language and bad lyrics. I think it should be limited to a select few channels on the radio and not intermixed with other genres.

Ya i agree with this statement!
Why??
Because rap has had a bad influence on teens.
And the content in most songs are just vulgar now-a-days..i hate it, nasty music..nasty nasty music.. Rap use to be okay..now its just . Like anyone wants to hear a rapper talk about how he got in a girls pants. God..

Okay, like I said in my statement, parents should be able to control what their child or teen listens to. Otherwise, you should go ahead and expect your child to listen to rap. You don't care, so why should they!

Rap music is not suited for this kind of exposure because it's so influenced by teenagers these days, they are influenced by music that promotes: Drinking, Partying, Drug abuse, Violence, Hate to Woman, etc.

WAKE UP!

Its not rap that influences teens to quote on queote " drink, party, drug abuse, violence. hate woman etc." its the people there around. what they see others doing and peer pressure to do what is "cool". i know because ima teen myself. Rap music doesn't make there decisions they do on there own. so don't blame rap for teens "idiotic decisions" and for not having the training some of there parents didn't teach them !

A large majority of the opposers on this page quite simply don't understand the point of the motion. This isn't just a case of some old men grumbling about the lack of decent music these days (they may not be wrong), but the exposure children of a constantly decreasing age experience to it. The very nature of rap music in general - the vulgar language, the lack of melody, the discriminatory comments and rebellious lyrics - should be seen as disgusting and yet deams its characteristics acceptable. Teenagers can be rebellious and disrespectful as it is - they need no encouragement.

I believe that rap music should be banned from the radio. Not only is it offensive, it also promotes violence. Above all, it is not really music. It is just a bunch of people yelling into a microphone.

Rap music has too much beat and not enough music. The lyrics rarely fit the music and most contain very poor grammar. So, not only is rap music offensive, it is also music of the uneducated.

All rap music should definitely be banned from the Internet forever. It only takes up valuable space on the radio and is a waste of time and money.

and Korn and ICP isn't yelling into the microphone? why should rap music have good grammar its not there to educate? that's what school is for and parents should teach kids like my mother taught me, its entertainment and listening to rap for as long as i can remember and I've never wanted to go out and commit crimes and be a video vixen because i'm not weak minded. and it takes up valuable space for what? porn?

I agree with Bulldog that if a particular piece of rap music contains offensive language, then it should be banned. If it doesn't then I don't see a problem.

Rap music that contains offensive themes and bad language should be banned from the radio altogether and given a parental guidance rating when it is available to purchase in shops.

Hmmm... I do believe it should be banned. But not only on the basis of there being cussing or vulgarity. Because you can have a negatively-effecting rap song that doesn't cuss. I think any songs that relay an idea that is negative or wrong should be banned. In short... I think it should be banned if it has bad language, and a bad message.. Not just language alone.

Yes and no. If the rap song contains bad lyrics that should not be heard by young children, then it should be banned from the radio. Today's children idolize rappers and rap music and it can influence their lives and the decisions they make. Everyday we see acts of violence that is committed by young people and I believe that their actions are influenced by the music they listen to. If the lyrics are not bad, then it is okay to put it on the radio. So, if the words are bad then I think that it should be banned. However, if there are no bad words, then it is okay to keep it playing on the radio.

No it should not be banned! People keep saying that rap music is bad today like music back then didnt say some common things. Like i like big butts and i can not lie. They dont just get this stuff from anywhere. Jus becuz music is not gospel or old music doesnt mean its bad. If you dnt like it dnt listen to it but there's people out there who do. And every rap song is not disrespectful if you really listen.

Why would an entire of genre of music be banned? Other genres have suggestive lyrics and profanity. They play the "clean" version on the radio. I have been mortified on more than one occasion by the songs I have heard coming from my daughter's i-Pod dock. That is, however why I pay attention. As a parent, I can enforce certain regulations on what my kids listen to. The older one has little to no restrictions and the younger one really doesn't care for bad language or explicit lyrics anyway, so it has not been much of an issue, aside from stepping in to stop her older sister from playing the songs when she is around. As parents, we are responsible for what our kids listen to. To an extent, we cannot totally prevent any and all things we find offensive. We would have to accompany them to all of their friends homes and practically make them a social outcast. I try to overlook some things and, instead, teach my kids what values I find important. They do not need to be singled out this way and I feel comfortable because of the open nature of our relationship. People who ban things and make rules that are not practical over everything in their childrens lives only end up with kids who may try to sneak things. My parents were very strict. I was totally compliant, but my sister was a total mess. They set so many rules and she is a free soul....she rebelled in a huge way. We have both grown to be responsible, mature adults with good morals and values, but she did not might not have placed herself in some of the dangerous situations that she did had my parents been a bit more lenient.

I don't know how you can be so stereotypical about a genre of music. That's like if I said all metal should be banned because it's all satanic, or music from the 60s should be banned because it's all about drugs.

No-one has put it better than del tha funkee homosapien when he said "Rap aint about bustin' caps and f*cking b!tches, it's about its about fluency with rhyming inginuity", and it's true.

Even the big bad thugs that you seem to think rap for the soul purpose of raping your children's innocence and get them addicted to heroin have done some songs that are really good influences. Eminem did a song about his drug addiction, and how bad it is (Drug Ballad), Immortal technique did a song about his thuggish past and how it haunts him (Dance With the Devil). Atmosphere wrote a song about cigarette addiction (The Skinny) Afroman wrote and anti-cannabis song (Because I Got High)

And these songs aren't paid for by the government and created by businessmen for the purpose of being a good influence. They are real stories told by real people, (well, not afroman) and a troubled person who raps seriously is going to make a kid listen more then some PSA.

The fact is that if you can think of a subject then there is a rap about it. MC Chris raps about reece's peices and star wars. MC Frontalot raps about how homosexual oppresion is wrong. Del tha funkee homosapien rapped about the importance of cleanliness (If You Must)

If this thread was "Gangster Music Should be Banned From The Radio" then people may be more inclined to vote for it. My mistake "vote FOR it! *thumb up*"

But make it seem like rap is the only music that has neg messages because rock talks about violent asks and many pop songs are just as negative as rap so if you ban one you ban all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If if you don't like the music then don't listen to its not that hard to change the radio . Ta got hands for a reason !

I am certainly no fan of rap and agree it is c-rap from a pure musical viewpoint and it has negative messages. I too wish I didn't have to hear it so much (especially blaring out of passing cars).

However when you talk about being banned you are talking about government control of the arts, and this I must very much oppose. I do not want the government telling me or anyone what they can and can't listen to (or enjoying any form of art). If you allow them to stop rap then next they will ban a form of art that YOU like.

If you want less rap music then spread your message of what you do want. Tell people they shouldn't listen to rap if it has negative messages. DO NOT involve the government!

Ok lets get a few things straight here. The only reason i made this account is so i can voice my word on rap because of the comments i have read against it.I am 23 years old i have listened to hip hop since i was 12 and yes my parents knew about it and was not bothered because their not like you lot who wouldn't let their child have a can of shandy.I love hip hop its the only music i will ever like (i hate rock now that is just noise) apart from that tho i have never killed someone sold drugs beat up my girlfriend or feel i need to carry a gun or took drugs (well the last one is a lie) all i'm saying is that to me all the people who have chosen to have rap banned are stupid small minded fools whoum themselves feel a person can be influenced by what he or she listens to which i am guessing would be them.Hip hop and rap have a massive history a massive fanbase so it would be impossible to ban it fullstop. All you people need to get your heads out of your arses and actually listen to some hip hop then maybe it would change how you feel about it.No its not just noise (less than rock) at least the lyrics are about life and life as life was or is for them any how im bored now

Well said mate. The only thing I will add is that at 23 you should really realise that there is more to music than just hiphop. Don't miss out on all that is out there by limiting yourself to one form of music. Hiphop is brilliant and all those who would see it banned are purely ignorant but if you love this form of music discover where it came from and you will open up your ears to so much more.

That's insane. Rap music is not only music its a way of expressing real life stories. Many rappers influence many young people in today's day and age. Yes I agree there is a lot of offensive and foul language but that I think is the only way you can get a point across to youngsters in today's generation and do so successfully. It definitely influences me and more than anything inspires me. Take Reverend Run from Run-D.M.C. He influenced many people too and take Mary J Blaige's song 'Runaway Love'. That definitely touched me. I don't see why you could think banning rap music would be beneficial. My advice is, if you don't like it don't listen to it. Simple!

Well all music is telling a story and all music influences young people its just egotistical to assume your music, rap, only does.
"Yes I agree there is a lot of offensive and foul language but that I think is the only way you can get a point accross to youngsters in todays generation and do so successfully."
Really and by chance what point are you trying to get across with half naked men and woman fake humping each other and sitting on the hoods of cars?
" I don't see why you could think banning rap music would be benificial."
it could do many things depending on what you banned. If you ban the guy going on about black and white racism and shooting whites maybe there might be just a little less racism and violence in the world?

But yes your final point is very good.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT DON'T LISTEN TO IT!

It's not fair to ban rap. If that was the case a lot of things should be be banned. What you like isn't going to e the same thing I like and vice versa. Not all rap is the same. What about country and pop and rock. They use vulgar language also. But I wouldn't ban it because its a form of expression. And as far as influencing children. If you don't want your child listening to it don't by the records for them. When they are in your presence change the channel. Be a role model to your child and enroll them in something positive. Don't blame rap for everything that goes wrong...

I agree with you on that. What about banning some of those horrible cartoons that come on. Children watch these as well. The Simpsons, Family Guy - the baby boy on that show is horrible, he curses and disrespect his parents, Sex, foul language, killings, shooting are all on the t.v. shows And they talk about Rap music being a major factor. If you banned Rap music we would still be left with these other things. No one says anything about all the shows that are very violent. Every other channel someone has gotten shot, stabbed, raped or something. Let's banned them all unless they all can clean up there act.

Rap music is expressive as is any other genre of music and it is not any more vulgar than some other genres can be. I think because it is mainstream, some people are against it. Banning it from the radio will only result in listeners finding another way to enjoy Rap music. It's not mainstream for no reason. Obviously there are people out there who support it. Radio has so many channels of other available music. If you don't support Rap, don't listen. If you feel that it is inappropriate for your children then sensor them, NOT radio. If Rap is such a negative thing, then maybe so much emphasis shouldn't be placed upon it and maybe today's youth would not as well. The more we attempt to shelter them from something the more they will want to be involved with it.

I think that Rap music should NOT be banned from the radio. Children might listen to it. But you should be able to control what your children listen to. And if you as a parent listen to that type of music...then you are not setting a good example for your child. You should listen to a song before the child listens to it to see if that song is OK or if it is negative!

Yes I also agree with you. I listen to that kind of music sometimes. But I am not always liking some of the songs that I thought that I would like. And so the radio station is the one that chooses the song that the listeners listen to. So how can you blame the rapper for giving them something to listen to. I mean if you don't like it then don't listen to it. Is that simple?

Although I do not prefer this type of music, we cannot simply make something illegal because we personally do not enjoy it. People should be able to select their means of entertainment. This is especially true with rap music as there is nothing sufficiently inethical in this genre for it to banned entirely from the radio. And rap is not randomly played in each station; there are stations that specialize in rap so one can easily avoid these.
Maybe some of the tracks should not be permitted on the radio but there are not many songs that are obscene to that extent and these single parts of rap should not be at the expense of all of this realm.
Lastly, think about the time and money congress would be wasting, attempting to do something as entirely pointless as removing rap from the radio. Remember, these are your tax dollars.

"i know i can be what i want to be
if i work hard at it, i will be where i wanna be"

is this so bad for the young population to hear, some rap songs to idolise violence and drugs, prostitution, BUT
so do many rock songs.

So if rap is banned, then so must be rock
and then we would be stuck with preppy music on the radio...

Rap music shouldn't be banned its all through the mind of the listener whose choice it is . One i hate rap. Its meaningless out bests of talentless artists that don't understand what it is to actually write music. Example: Soljaboi- yea trick yea and my lipgloss by lil momma the most useless on ever created it makes me wanna take her by the thought sit her down and make her write some lyrics that actually have meaning to her. Well then i guess rap does promote violence, (i just wanted to strangle lil momma lol)

Rap has a lot of meaning to it. It is a way of people expressing themselves through music just like hip hop and country. Who cares if there are swear words! Its not like no one is ever going to hear any swearing in their lives. A good parent would be able to teach their kid not to swear. People don't listen to it for the swearing they listen to it for the meaning. Sure the rappers swear and say bad things but if that is their way of expressing themselves there is nothing wrong with it. Its a big world and people go to school and work and watch t.v. If rap is banned so should t.v. And movies because they all show the same thing. People you cant always be sheltered from every bad thing in the world! Rap is not one of the worst things!

Despite the rap music contains some foul, controversial and negative words and phrases; it should not be justified to ban it from radio. Everyone has their own choice of music and the one who likes it would surely miss it from the radio. This would be very unjust to ban a certain genre of music from radio as there are lots of admirers of this sort of music. Its mounting fame proves that it has the reach to a number of people. So banning this rap music would not be a fair step in any way. This very much simple that who does not like it or not convinced with this type of sound would never go to tune in the radio. Many people can say that rock or the metal music should be banned then as there are some pretty bad metal songs too.
