Schools Should Not Punish Children For Defending Themselves, Nor Should They Punish Students For Using Profanity When They Are Seriously Injured.
At the school I went to, you could be punished for defending yourself from students attacking you. Why? Because "physical assault" is not allowed, even in self defense. With profanity, you could get your fingers stuck in a door hinge, or get a locker slammed in your face, and still be punished because you said a bad word because your face or fingers happened to be hurting like hell.

Self defense and free speech are enshrined in the Bill of Rights.

I totally agree.

First of all, 'profanity' is a matter of opinion. At my old school, you'd get in trouble for saying stupid, darn, crud, or things like that! At my new school, there's a rule against profanity at the level of cr*p (stupid profanity filters...) and higher. But it isn't enforced hardly at all. Why? The teachers don't consider profanity that bad. Plus, profanity differs from area to area. Why is yelling sh*t when you get hurt, or you're late for class, or something bad happens to you a problem? It's no different than saying dang or darn or crud. They both mean the same thing, that you didn't like whatever happened. The only difference is how severe people think they are. Profanity's a way of expressing strong, negative emotions to others. It also helps vent, though it can make people mad if you direct it at them.

Self defence shouldn't be punished. It isn't that hard to prove. Eye witness accounts, anyone? Also in many cases the demeanor of the fighters gives it away. One person might be unconfrontational and very unlikely to start a fight, while the other has anger issues and picks fights with everyone. Yes, it can be hard to tell. That doesn't mean that you should punish the defender when it CAN be proven as self defence!

That's my say!

For the innocent yes, but some kids
take things too far trying to be cute.

I agree children should not be punished for defending themselves nor should they be punished for using profanity. I totally agree with you.

Really? I have a mate who was once struck in the eye by a rounders ball. He lay on the ground swearing continuously for a full minute before being taken to medical and noone batted an eyelid. And I know for a fact that if violence is genuinely in self defence, there will be no punishment. I agree with the statement though. Only makes sense, after all.

Though i agree with the premise and agree that self-defense is sometimes needed I have to disagree with you none the less because if there is a fight both parties will say that the other started it if they think that it will keep them out of trouble. By saying that no fighting will be tolerated for any reason the school makes sure that the guilty will be punished even though this at times punishes the innocent. It also stops ppl from pushing someone to take the 1st swing which some do simply to try to get away with a fight by not throwing the 1st swing.

There are no extenuating circumstances for the use of profanities tbh. As for the defending oneself, children need discipline. This is not the jungle.

You think it is good discipline not to hit back someone who is attacking?! As for profanity, often you can't help it.

Defending yourself against what? How is it that you are "defending"? Because if you mean violence in retaliation of violence, then its a no-brainer.

And about the profanity - could you explain how the use of it is somehow useful in pain management?

If someone attacks you, you attack back. That's commonsense. Profanity isn't useful in pain management, but could you find anyone who can drop a brick on there foot and not even say "owshhh" or "owffff"?
