Er, most of us who were young in the 60's weren't tripping on acid , smack or any other drugs. I
think teachers might smile at the comments made about them here!
I have a friend whose son was bullied very badly on Bebo and his school took very little action on
this.
I think any websites that encourage bullying, demeaning others, drugs, sex and early loss of
virginity should be discouraged. Non of these things are to be seen as good things.
The shame is that the few spoil it for the rest but if only one person is hurt that would be a good
reason to ban the site on school premises.
It's not the same as detention, nor is this a good deterrent.
Bullying in any form should have no toleration and if anyone is being bullied and not supported
they need to talk to the police too.
You can't compare bullying with not doing your homework and getting a detention. |

I agree with Mackenzie. Simply handing out a detention is not enough. A detention is something that
should be used for very minor offenses such as not bringing your homework to class. I believe that
if you did something to another person to cause them harm in any way, then you should be expelled
from school. If the school rules clearly say not to go on Bebo, then don't do it. Violation of
school rules should be punishable by expulsion. School rules are set up for the student's safety.
They also teach students responsible behavior and what is acceptable and what is not. Sometimes
bullying is not punished because it is hard to prove, but sooner or later, the bully will mess up
and get caught.
So, as they say....if you do the crime, then do the time. |

It's an unfortunate reality that schools often do not effectively address the very serious issue of
bullying, which is a more pressing problem than students communicating with each other
electronically while in class, or visiting social networking sites. However, that does not mean that
it becomes acceptable to take a more lenient approach in the case of students who use these
electronic tools in class.
Most teachers are very frustrated by the increasing prominence of cell phones, pdas, laptops and
other electronic gadgets, which make their way into the classroom and often distract students.
Whenever one student uses these devices, or visits a website unrelated to their class, they distract
not only themselves, but their peers as well.
I am not convinced that handing out a detention would be an effective remedy to this problem and it
may also send the message that using bebo or communicating electronically in class is not such a
serious offence after all. I would argue that the most effective way of dealing with this problem
would be to deduct points from a student's grade and to contact the parents if the problem persists. |
