Certain music has been blamed for these things for as long as I can remember. I do not think that any healthy people listening to any type of music are more likely to harm themselves or others than anyone else. I can see where some brooding, depressed individual may become consumed in some morbid lyrics, but they already had a problem and the music is not responsible for their actions.

Not only music is targeted either. TV, movies and video games are included in the things that are supposedly making people more violent. I say that is bs. I have watched horror movies since I was a kid. I have no violent tendencies. I don't even like to squish bugs. I put them outside. No, I don't love bugs...I honestly am grossed out by the squishing part though.

People are affected by some of these things if they have a problem and they are purposely looking toward them to identify with them. While I feel for anyone with a mental illness, I don't think that music or any other form of entertainment is responsible for the mental illness.

This debate is brilliant to be honest. I'm glad so many people agree with me that rock music does not cause self harm.

Peer pressure causes self harm

No rock music is not responsible for people self harming. I believe there are many possible reasons why it could happen. It is linked to depression and to people wishing to assert a degree of control over their lives. Some people below seem to think it is an attention thing, I have known people who self harm and it is not something they shout about or try to get attention for.

Commonly people blame self harm on rock music ,rap music, and heavy metal. If any type of music causes self harm its country. Studies show that regions with more country stations have higher suicide rates. The common theme of hopelessness in the lyrics causes depression.

It is basically some people that think it is cool to do it and says it makes them feel better..... "rock" music has nothing to do with Self harm and does not influence it in anyway

Self harming is just to do with attention seeking in my eyes because most people who do it are people who are after something or someone but they don't like them back so they do it to make them feel sorry for them but i think its just pathetic.

To say that self harming is down to rock music is wrong but to say that is simply an attention thing is wrong also.

No, a knife does because of peer pressure and people wanting to prove themselves.

Exactly. I mean My Chemical Romance were getting blamed last year for the suicide of a young girl. There was a protest about this outside a newspaper office somewhere (cant remember which newspaper) and all sorts of kids were protesting against it saying that MCR saved there lives. It only takes people to actually listen to the lyrics of the songs. E.g "I am not afraid to keep on living, i am not afraid to walk this world alone" This is from one of MCR's most famous songs. Bands don't make me want to commit suicide or self harm. The music is what kids look at for inspiration, something to pick them back up, not assist them in killing themselves.

The media blame bands like My Chemical Romance for people self harming and suicide.
I hate how people blame this genre of music and call it a suicidal cult.
Many people who don't listen to this genre have self harmed or worse so why do people blame it.
In my opinion rock music is lively mostly and have u ever heard in My Chemical Romance's song Famous Last Words it says ' i am not afraid to keep on living' so how could they blame it.
I will admit some songs are sad example Haewthrone Heights-Ohio is for lovers but its one song many other songs are really good and not sad.
Stop blaming it!
