I think so, most wars in history and even today tend to be based on conflicting religion. Even if
people could comprehend that their God(s) wanted peace, it would make a lot of difference. But I
suppose some people will always be brainwashed, which is a real shame. People should be able to
believe in whatever they wish to anyway. |

Religion is an excuse used for centuries to commit evil against others that is factual!!! |

I totally agree! Religion is meant to be about peace, harmony, love etc! But it's not at all! Islam
creates hate with its terrorists and suicide pacts. Look at 9/11 all them poor innocent people
killed because of what...because of RELIGION! Look at Ireland! They are meant to follow
Christianity. But because one was Catholic and the other Protestant it resulted in a war. How can
religion signify love if even tendencies within one religion can cause a war! |

I don't want to say that religion itself is the root of most evil, but there have been horrible
crimes carried out in the name of religion, not to mention how many people had religion forced upon
them. Religion might have been something good, something pure...but humans got their little meat
hooks on it, and its been downhill ever since. |

That is true by definition... "Evil" is a concept brought forth by religions and their misdirected
efforts to avoid it are often the cause of it.
In the natural world there is NO EVIL. When a spider catches a fly it's a dark and dirty trick, but
it's not evil, it's a natural food source. When a bear mauls a person it isn't evil, it's defending
its territory or cubs.
But in comparison to nature, when human beings say something is a bad sin (let's say homosexuality
for example) and then they proceed to whip, torture, and stone to death the person who is
homosexual, they are not doing it to eat or protect themselves, they are doing it just to hurt or to
use the threat of hurting to stop people from behaving in the way they call a sin.
Anyway, if a solar blast somehow wiped all our minds of the concept of religion we would all just be
natural animals again - and there would be no evil. |

It is good that we have so many religions in our world. Each has their own respective ideas and
practices. Perhaps that is the reason why there are so many religious beliefs in the world. Every
religion is good in its own way and they involve some cultural acts in it which makes them unique in
their own way. But taking these religious issues there have been many riots and unnecessary
conflicts in the world. Taking one religious issue into the gunpoint many opportunist people have
used the other religion to become successful in his selfish motive. Most of the remarkable incidents
in the history of mankind somewhere or the other circles around the topics related to religions.
Thus we can say that religion is definitely a good thing that mankind has but making use of them is
very harmful and is the root for most evil. |

Although I don't really agree with the argument, I agree with the concept. While it is probably
true that more people have killed in the name of a god than for any other reason, it doesn't follow
that without religion we would be peaceful or happier. I think people are going to find ways to
kill each other, regardless.
Religion does some good: It gets people out from in front of their TV and allows people to socialize
with others they might not have ever met. The problem comes in with contradictions between religion
and science. I feel that religion is holding back our society at this point - people are believing
that their life is okay because they'll get to go to heaven when, in fact, their life is a shambles
but they have no motivation to fix anything.
Religion tends to remove the weight of our future from our shoulders because everything is in "god's
hands." There is also false hope that people have about their own future that I think can be
directly related to religion's influence.
While I don't think there is anything inherent in the definition of religion that makes it the root
of evil, the development and influence that religion plays in the modern world does more harm than
good. |

No, I'd have to say that bigotry is the root of all evil. Bigotry isn't caused by religion, it's
caused by a bunch of selfish and intolerant people who wont accept that people can believe in
whatever they want. |

This sounds alot like the title of a documentary produced by Richard Dawkins. Very interesting, but
he attacks a strawman.
The fact is, as XieXie was so kind to point out, that atheistic thinking has been the cause of the
most deaths in history.
But the question is: Is religion the root of all evil. What is evil? Evil cannot be defined without
a prior knowledge of what is good. When most people talk about evil, they mean one of two things: 1.
Moral evil - such as murder, lying, etc.
2. Natural evil - such as tornadoes, earthquakes, disease, etc.
However, as I said, we cannot know that murder for example is evil, unless we know ahead of time
that it does not meet the moral standard of the sanctity of human life.
This is in fact an argument presented by C.S.Lewis (former philosopher and professor of medieval
literature at cambridge University in England), in his book Mere Christianity.
There must be some form of ultimate moral standard by which we judge what is good and what is evil,
otherwise it makes no sense to speak of evil. This is where atheism falls short, because there is no
basis for an absolute moral standard in atheism. If there is no absolute moral standard, then there
is nothing on which to base our judgements of evil or good. That means that we cannot consistently
say that murder is wrong, but helping an elderly woman across the street is right. If Atheism, and
therefore evolution are right, then everyone should simply do as he desires, what is best for his
survival, and all talk of evil or good is pointless.
Therefore, religion cannot be the root of all evil, evil is opposition to what is good. Most
religions are simply trying to explain what is good, and therefore, by consequence, what is evil.
Christianity describes the root of evil as essentially pride.
C.S.Lewis, in his argument says that for there to be an absolute moral standard, there must be
someone who sees to it that the standard is kept. Orthodox, evangelical christianity claims that
God, is by definition the standard of what is good, as he is infinitely good. Therefore, evil would
be whatever goes against the character of God.
So, for example:
God is truth - Therefore lying is wrong.
God is life, and created life - Therefore it is wrong to murder
As I said before, without a moral lawgiver, and an absolute moral standard, there is no foundation
for any moral standard, and all talk about good and evil is pointless. |

Religion is not the root of most evil. First off let me state some wars that were not caused by
religion:
Napoleon Wars
WWI
WWII
Ottoman Conquests.
Korean War
Hundred Years War
Thirty Years War
Cold 'War'
Russian Revolution
Prussian Conquests
Indochina Independence
EITC occupation of India
War of 1812
Vietnam War
Bosnia-Herzegovina
Occupation of Tibet and Taiwan
Civil War
Japan-Russia Conflict
Manchuria Occupation
Punic Wars
Peloponesian Wars
Alexander the Great's Conquest
This is a very tiny list. Lets not forget the big ones two. Mao Zedong and Josef Stalin.
Responsible for the deaths over +60 million. They were greatly inspired by atheism and Marxism.
Now, the Inquisition and the Crusades are far less terrible (But that still doesn't justify them),
and less than 50,000 people died altogether.
"....or even Judaism who slaughter Muslims in there masses just for being Muslim" What? Jews
killing Muslims. It is quite the other way around.

No I think greed, fear, and anger are the roots of all evil and often religion is used to justify or
perpetuate the actions that stem from these emotions. |

Fighting for something you believe is good is not evil. Rather, religion is a source of good. People
are the root of all evil. |

Not true religion tells people how they should live your life, how to dress, and all sorts of other
things. It tells you what to do what not to do if there where no religion there would be chaos
because nobody would have any morals woman would be getting raped and beaten no body would get
married the world would be a complete living hell! Plus rulers will go to war with other countries
for more money. Then they use religious differences to justify it. Like right now just about every
one knows that we (US) are in Iraq still, because President G.W. Bush wants to take control of all
of there oil refineries because the more oil you have the more money you make. |
