Religion Is Selfish. (Namely Christianity)
The idea of a personal relationship with God and everybody having a special purpose. What purpose do you have if you are a starving child in Africa?

Religion IS selfish..........
But, as a human being surving life on this planet, you have to have a Self in order to even exist here in the form of human flesh alive.

So, in some basic sense at least, selfishness is a virtue.
Virtue is it's own reward: Prolonged longevity and success.

So, be selfish, and enjoy your religion, I say.
"for that is the whole duty of man (to fear God and keep His covenant)". (Ecclesiastes).

I would have to agree with this. I am a christian, and i love God.
But it is obvious that Christians are selfish. Well, most of the Christians out there just say they are Christians, compared to the true Christians who actually try not be selfish, but want to have a heart of God, where they give all they can give, and love all they can love.
But yeah, since Christians are humans, they tend to be selfish, because no matter how much people want to do right, it will still happen where people think more of themselves over others.

It's people who are innately selfish; religion is but a human invention. We all want more for ourselves, what differs is how we try to get it.

The reason people don't steal and murder to get more is because of selfish altruism: We sometimes benefit more in by not being selfish for one simple reason: You can't protect yourself while you're sleeping.

When a religious person does something for others, he doesn't do it for no reason. He does it to gain brownie (or brown nose) points with his mythical "god". It's still a selfish act.

When an atheist does something for others, he does it because he wants to live in a civilized society (as above, you can't protect yourself at night) so the atheist tries to make it one. The atheist is just as selfish as the theist, but with one major difference: Honesty about the reason.

The reason we choose to help each other probably stems from evolution. There are many places in nature where cooperation with a single social species or between two or more species is mutually beneficial.

When one thinks about it, this is the basis for human morality, not any mythical being; if we lived in isolation and in small groups no larger than 10-20, we'd probably see taking things by force as ethical.

At it's core, religion and religious belief is very selfish, it's intended to answer questions about the world in a manner that is comforting to the indivldual, regardless of whether or not it's factually true. Beyond that, as the OP says, how ridiculous is it to think that you have the creator of the universe on your side? That's how wars, racism, sexism, and all forms of hatred get started, thinking "God said I'm special, therefore I'm better than you."

I think this is quite a profound insight. The essence of religion is the view that what we do, and even what we think, really matters. The alternative view, that we are just poor, helpless creatures adrift in a frightening world, buffeted by random dangers, with no one who watches over us or even cares about us, for many people, is too scary to be contemplated.

I definitely agree with this. I saw a video in which a woman who survived 9/11 claimed that God had saved her...how selfish is that? Is she suggesting that God decided to save her over the other thousands that died?

When people say God loves them and has a special relationship with them and purpose for them they are definitely being selfish. What is God's purpose for a severely disabled person or an African child who will die of starvation? Does God have a special loving relationship with a paedophile or rapist?

I am largely referring to Christianity here.

Point 1.....If God had a purpose for her after 911 but was done with or the others had FULFILLED their purpose, how was she in any way shelfish?
Point 2....If a person says God loves them, they are right, even if they are a paedophile or rapest. GOD IS LOVE and cannot help but LOVE. God HATES sin and the ACTIONS of a paedophile or rapist, but not the person.
To say you have a special relationship with God means you've PUT OUT THE EFFORT to have a relationship with HIM.
Christopher Reeves was a quad, disabled person, couldn't even take a breath on his own. Yet, he brought HOPE to people like himself and medical progress for quadriplegics, he would have never done had he not suffered, without complaining. a good christian example of not being selfish and purpose.
Maybe the purpose of starving people is to give you the opportunity to have compassion and give of yourself, I don't pretend to know.
But NO religion GIVES more than Christians.
Name one.

Seems that within 2 sentences, you couldn't stay on topic here....The title is one subject and your comment a completely different topic.
You know it says in the Bible that a DOUBLE MINDED person is UNSTABLE in ALL his ways.
Topic 1: Religion is selfish......religion is a belief system and selfishness is a human characteristic, that his nothing to do with a system of belief, other than the Bible saying the we should deny the flesh (human characteristic) and walk in the spirit (which is an inside job)
If anyone had been able to fulfill the scriptures, then Jesus would not have HAD to die on the cross. Jesus told Peter that He was going to die on the cross and "for this purpose, I came into this world"...jist is there, may not be an exact quote..easy to look up.
Yes He CHOSE to let the Romans and Jews judge and convict and hang Him on the cross, to fulfill scripture.
Topic 2: If Jesus being perfect (perfect example of how to live) had a PURPOSE to suffer and die, what makes you think that God doesn't have a purpose for others who suffer and die.
What you should be asking is why YOU haven't been suffering and dying, and living the life of luxury you live.

- Red Cross
- YMCA
- Abolition of the Slave trade
- Salvation Army Thrift stores
- Organisations such as Worldvision, and 30 hour famine.
- Women's rights movements
- Most US ivy league universities, in fact most modern universities were founded by men who were devout Christians.
Contrary to popular atheistic propaganda, devout Christians were the cause of most of the morally good advancements in society.
Christianity, as the Bible explains it, is not selfish, it is totally the opposite. However, Christians are humans who often have selfish motives for their actions. A system of belief cannot be judged by those who follow it poorly.

Just because you are not of religion doesn't mean you should critasize it. You have no idea what it is like!

the world isn't about shoulds. Shoulds are opinions. You should die is a opinion. If in his opinion he should criticise religion then obviously he's doing what he should.

Good religion encourages spiritual principles that go contrary to our instinctual impulses. Our instinctual impulses are our selfish and even Darwinian responses from our nature.

No, it isn't. If religion is so selfish, why did Jesus let himself by tortured to death?

Let himself!? oh yeh he really had loads of choice in the matter when the jews sentenced him to death. I think you'll find that jesus really did not want to be crucified as i would imagine it is quite painful and degrading.

Christ said the two greatest commandments are to love God and love others. Selfishness, in the sense of self-centeredness, is the antithesis of Christ's teachings, therefore, the Christian religion does not promote selfishness.

I've got to disagree. While it has it's dark sides, the good religion does for people is undenyable. While I'm not advocating organised religion, I can recognise that it is capable of helping people.
