Religion Is More And More A Social And Cultural Comformity Than People Truly Believing In These Ancient Dogmas That They Wouldn't Believe In Any Other Situation.
Finsch brought up a good point and I tend to believe believers like many people find comfort in numbers and this would include religion and even picking a religion. The dogma is weakening as people become more freethinkers not bounded by ancient story telling as fact.

I have to say that I believe that it is just as much passed down as it is a social conformity. I have not heard too many stories of people being converted to religion after living in a non-believing home during their childhood.

I went back and forth on this one because it is hard to know the true character of even one person let alone a 7 billion. I don’t think there is a subject that people tell more lies about particularly to themselves. Finally I am on the agree side because I think it is a good debate. I do think that ultimately social conformity has always been and may always be the largest single factor in religion, politics, and ethical decisions for most people. However the shear chaos of different choices available today I think forces more people to consider things in detail.

There's really no rational reason to believe in the supernatural claims of religion today. It was understandable, back when people didn't know much about how the world around them worked, that's not the case today. Religion has really turned into a giant social in-group where people pretend that being part of the in-crowd makes you a better person and they profess belief in these weird things, even if they don't internally take them tremendously seriously. I'd go so far as to say that the majority of theists these days are only in it so they look good to the neighbors, most neither know anything about the beliefs they profess to follow, nor understand the doctrines that they pretend are valid. It's like a silly secret society, there are rituals that they go through because it's what they've always done, but nobody thinks any of it is real.

Adhering to religious beliefs is very very much a cultural and social identity thing. Just look at all the people who skip church most of the year and then choose to go on holidays or during visits home to see family. They want to belong and be part of an event, but they're not really going because their daily lives hinge on the dogma or beliefs of that particular church, otherwise they'd be active year round.

That's not to say for everyone it's just social and cultural, clearly there are true believers out there too.

No, I think more people have started worshiping a new idol. Themselves.

Nah. It's always been that way. Back in the good old days (and even in some existing cultures) the social and cultural conformity was and is forced upon people.
