Rap music of TODAY sucks!!! Only dumb, talentless brutes dominate the industry. All they talk about
is sex, violence, drugs and beating somebody's ass-yet they claim that they talk about real life
experience. If they were intellingent, then they would think that if the more they talk about it,
the more it will occur. I hope that it's banned forever someday. |

It's 100% true. It's also why chivalry and grammar are dying. |

The rap songs TODAY are. The one ones before were intelligent and thought provoking, like Nas, Mos
Def & Common. Now rappers like 50 Cent & Soulja Boi are ruining the once great reputation of rap
music. |

Yes most of them are. They talk about drugs alcohol and $ex |

Most are because it has cursing in it. |

Well it depends on what type of rap you are talking about. I like Christain rap but other rap is
just obnoxious. |

I'm totally against it. I mean, come on, it's loud, noisy, and soooo annoying!!!!! |

Yes!!!!!!!!the old rap songs talk about life now all they do is swear |

I do agree to this point. According to my knowledge there are maximum numbers of rap songs based on
youth’s ill life progression. This is not granted to convey this message to every youth who would
generate a disciplined and peaceful life in future. A lot of rap songs tell the stories of youth
taking drugs, abusing the society and having sex. This scenario is not at all acceptable in any
context of life. Some of the rap artists are not interested in serving this kind of lyrics or
appearances, but the numbers of this type of rap artists are getting lower these days. The numbers
of the sub-standard rap artists are increasing day by day and they are doing nothing but driving the
youth in a wrong direction just only to get fulfilled their account with dollars and pounds. |

All they do is swear, talk about drugs, sex, alcohol and lots of other stuff. This is almost always
inappropriate for all ages to hear |

Rap today in general promotes the idea of women as sex objects to today's youth |

I semi-agree. I do think that most rap songs do send a bad message to younger people. There are some
rap songs that are ok. But I do think that a lot of hard core rap songs talk bout nothing but
smoking, doing drugs, having sex, and living like a celebrity when in the real world not all people
can afford to do that. They make kids think that it's ok to do all these things when they really
not. |

As mentioned, there are some rap songs that are about love and such, but most rap songs are
invariably about drugs, sex, and crime. Rappers swear more than any other genre of artist and talk
of the more vulgar things that people don't usually mention in public. Kids these days - my
contemporaries and peers - are more interested about the next joint they roll than their education.
They curse and fight and gamble, and a lot of it is due to new-age rap culture. Everyone wants to be
a "gangsta." Don't get me wrong, this is not discriminatory against any races, and I do respect rap
for what it SHOULD be. But for heaven's sake, Don Imus was fired from his job for saying "nappy
headed hos," but the term "ho" is used in rap songs that are played on public airwaves every single
day. Why do people allow such vulgarity to continue? It is absolutely baffling that parents could
consider letting their kids listen to such negative influences. |

There is poetry in rap. Just wait until the next song on my shuffled playlist comes on, OK here are
the lyrics:
I thought I saw you yesterday
But I didn't stop cause you was walking the opposite way
I guess I could have shouted out your name
But even if it was you I don't what I would say
We can sit and reminisce about the old school
Maybe share a cigarette because we both fools
Chop it up and compare perspectives
Life, Love, Stress, and Set backs
Yes
You could tell me how hard you had it
And you could show me all the scares to back it
And we can analyze each complaint
Break it down and explain these mistakes I make
I like to tangle up the strings of the puppetry
But you knew me back when i was a younger me
You've seen Sean in all types of life
And I've been meaning to ask you if I'm doing alright
Yesterday, was that you
Looked just like you
Strange things my imagination might do
Take a breath reflect on what we've been through
Or am I just going crazy cause I miss you
Yesterday, was that you
Looked just like you
Strange things my imagination might do
Take a breath reflect on what we've been through
Or am I just going crazy cause I miss you
I'm Shook
I know
I pushed when I should of pulled
Took it all back if I could I put that on my soul
And I would make a top notch good listener
If you could block off a little time out to give it here
Since we went our separate paths
I hit a couple of snags
That remind me of the past
I cant front I'm having a blast
But damned if I ain't afraid of how long its gonna last
Sitting here wishing we could kick it
Gimme your opinions I do miss the criticisms
I didn't mean to be distant
Make a visit
I'll wait up and keep the coffee brewing in the kitchen
But who am I jokin' with
Theres no way that you and I will ever get to re-open it
It doesn't matter this is more then love
And maybe if I'm lucky I'll see you out the conner of...
Yesterday was that you?
Looked just like you
Strange things my imagination might do
Take a breath reflect on what we've been through
Or am I just going crazy cause I miss you.
Yesterday was that you?
Looked just like you
Strange things my imagination might do
Take a breath reflect on what we've been through
Or am I just going crazy cause I miss you.
And when you left I didn't see it coming
I guess I slept it ain't like you was running
You crept out the front door slow
And I was so self-absorbed I didn't even know
And by the the time I looked up, it was booked up
You put it all behind you, the bad and the good stuff
A whole house full of dreams and steps
I think you'd be impressed with the pieces I kept
You disappeared but the history is still here
Thats why I try not to cry over split beer
I can't eve get mad that your gone
Leaving me probably the best thing you ever taught me
I'm sorry, its official
I was a fistful
I didn't keep it simple
Chip on the shoulder, anger in my veins
Had so much hatred, now it brings me to shame
Never thought about the world with out you
And I promise, I'll never say another bad word about you
I thought I saw you yesterday,
But I know it wasn't you, cause you passed away dad
Looked just like you
Strange things my imagination might do
Take a breath reflect on what we've been through
Or am I just going crazy cause I miss you
That was "Yesterday" by "Atmosphere", and there are 500 other songs just as or more beautiful than
this on my MP3 player.
Even if it was a bad influence I wouldn't care, because every time I see racism or sexism or
homophobia displayed in a non violent way I feel all tingly inside because I know I have a right to
say something you might not like, even if no-one needs to hear my kind of influence EVER.
I'm also glad that you people think it is a bad influence, so when I shoot up my school I can just
say "Wasn't me, slim shady said to do it again" |

I'm living proof that hip hop or rap can have a positive affect of the mind of the youth |

1. You cant blame the rappers for what they talk about...their being pimped and used by record
execs, the label, and all the other suits you don't see or hear.
2.the only rap that is pointless is the rap that gets mainstream attention...grant it underground
and indie rap do talk about sex, drugs, violence, and swear a lot it has a message and a deeper
meaning...how their life is really lived...they don't want you to copy it just letting you know
3. If the influence is so bad on your kids, parents, monitor who and what they listen to, and if you
don't wanna do that then sit them down and talk to them about the music they listen to. Let em know
the music shouldn't affect or alter their lives from how they want to live.
4. The mainstream artist are only portraying an image...that's not their real life...use some god
given common judgement....if someone got 3-4 songs about killing somebody their probably lying...
And to touch on the don imus subject...he called a very intelligent group of females nappy headed
hos....yes the word ho is used in rap music but it's not directed to them personally. They have the
option of filtering out words that they feel are derogatory...don imus made the mistake of trying to
"joke" wit people he didn't know...its just like i know i'm not a nigga but sometimes i can act like
one but for some stranger to point that out to me yea imma be offended.... |

I think that rap is given a bad image by the media. The big money makers, unfortunately, are the
songs and artist that promote sex, drugs and violence. It is mainstream rap that is corrupting the
minds of our youth. |

|

|

Some rap is bad...but I don't think that it's influencing anybody to go shooting people up in a
ghetto. Maybe to swear a lot, but I think they would do that anyway. People thought Ray Charles
was a horrible influence when he came out, but look at what he's done to the music industry today.
And what about Christian rap? There is such a thing, you know. |

Rap is not a bad influence, your simply profiling a genre, if you will. Its the same as saying that
heavy metal is a bad influence. |

Please.... Everything influences youth today. I have flipped through may channel that influenced
youth negatively. I guess all of them should be taken off as well. |

I listen to rap, i have since i was 6 years old (older brother played it). There is 3 basic types of
rap, there is the one that has no meaning where its all "imma kill that mother f***a or just after
sex and drugs, there is Gangster rap, witch is about the hardships people have been through, witch
also contain a lot of swearing and say f*** it all, then there is the influential rap, this makes
you think about your own life and how there are always people who have it worse, and, deal with
it
I'm not saying young people should listen to it, I'm not saying they shouldn't, but if they do, they
should certainly listen to the spiritual rap songs, the ones about peoples lives, how easy life is
lost, how easy it is for everything to go in the drain, and how messed up it is to come from nothing
to superstardom.
Most of Tupac Shakur, considered if not the greatest, one of the greatest rap artists ever, most of
his songs are about hardships he endured, and how bad the ghetto was, hes not saying that he hated
it, hes saying that he had to deal with it, and he tells us what it was like.
People like 50 Cent rap about nothing, its all about pimping hoes, killing people and doing drugs,
its the kind of songs people listen to because its there.
Lupe Fiasco, he is the least swearing rapper, he has some of the deepest flows of alive rappers
today and just tells people, what it was like to him, how hes happy hes out, and how he idolized the
other rappers that knew what he was going through
i suppose if you've actually gone through everything that they have, they are the only ones that you
can turn to that know what your going through
There are a few good rappers, that tell the truth of "how it was to be them":
-Very Early Eminem, and later serious songs (when eminem tries, he can say some of the deepest
lyrics that will make you question if there is a hidden meaning)
-Tupac Shakur (possibly the most quoted and influential rapper of all time. His words will make your
brain will stop thinking about everything and just listen to these godly lyrics)
-Biggie Smalls (he may of swore, talked about drugs and sex, but he has some of the most influential
songs that could make you think deep, get angry at the song and laugh all in the same line)
-Lupe Fiasco (The most pure rapper alive today, he doesn't swear, talk about sex or drugs, and he
still brings superstardom to his name)
-Papoose (Swears enough to make the Devil mad, but, his words will melt your soul, he will make you
think if the Ghettos really exist even when there at their best)
I'm sorry if i have many typos, I'm not that good with typing or grammar, probably because of the
rap i listen to :P |

I have to disagree. There are plenty of other styles of music that are also bad influences in their
own ways, but I agree that rap music has become very vulgar and exploitative. I think radios should
block swear words and offensive terms for women just like with any other style of music. There IS
some good rap music out there that isn't about drugs and sex and all that, but instead about other
things that are perfectly harmless in their own way, and I like them the best. Rap IS supposed to be
about poetry and rhythm, and I agree with Hidell - it is sad how it's become so perverted in its
ways. I think music in general should be more positive in its ideas, not just rap. |
| |
|
| |
|

I am against the generalization. It is not just rap music that is a bad influence. Other genres of
music are also promoting sex and bad language extensively. Music videos of most pop stars are
literally disturbing to watch such is the extent of nudity in them.
I agree that the quality of music –lyrics and videos – should be improved but I also think that
something can not be a negative influence unless you let it be one. |
| |
|
| |
|
| |
|
|
I am in the middle with this argument. But i am more against than i am for it. I think that anything
is a bad influence when you allow it to be. The only reason why it is such an influence is because
you allow your children to take it in as an influence. I have always hated rap music anyway, it has
no meaning anymore. But i mean, you don't see people that listen to death metal go off an kill
themselves. |

"violent movies are a bad influence" "violent video games are a bad influence" "rap songs are a bad
influence" "movies glorifying war battles are a bad influence" ...the list could go on and on. And
sure, some songs may not promote the best messages--but there are arguably plenty of decent rap
songs as well. Where is the love by black eyed peas is definitely a rap song, but it promotes good
messages. Hah even hey mama by kanye west.
The fact is, there are some Brittany spears songs that are real inappropriate but that would go
into the "pop" category. Paris hilton sings pop (if you can even call it singing...) and she is
known across the world as an inappropriate role model to teenagers. Then there are definitely some
heavy metal, and screamo music that promote bad messages. I just think we can't pinpoint it to only
rap artists and rap music. |

Sorry! I meant to put this in the agree side.
Ok. I wholeheartedly agree with this state and here is the reason: As a student constantly I see
student that religiously follow the rap culture and all of them are bloody morons. They foolishly
think that being work and effort are nothing and that image and appearance is everything and that
being an snide bastard is the way to be. And the lyrics in the songs are generic, corrupting, and
just plain stupid. And the music behind it is generic synthesized repeating beats made b y some
unnamed music mixer that never get credit.
Crank that souja boy?!?!?!? What is that?!
Any other music type would be better be is Soul, Rock, Blues, Jazz, or Metal. |
| |
|
| |
|
| |
|
|
A lot of it does seem mindless and foolish. But is it any more mindless and foolish than the average
"I love you baby" theme of most other pop songs? I'm not convinced it has any serious negative
effects in the real world. Do people listen to these songs then run out and start spraying people
with Uzis? It seems more of a harmless affectation to me, just like the rich kids who used to
pretend they were hard by listening to heavy metal.
I don't care much for rap music but it's a shame in a way that it became so corrupted. Originally,
it was a vehicle for political protest which, whether you agree with it or not, was at least a
matter of substance. Listen to Public Enemy if you want to hear some of that, "Fight the Power" for
example. Tupac Shakur's about the only rapper I'd say there was any real poetry in. Now he's a
member of the Dead Poets Society. |
