Rap Is Terrible. Rock/metal Is Awesome.
I, personally, cannot stand rap.... Rock is amazing. Linkin Park. Metallica. Rise Against. The Offspring. Plain White T's. Slipknot. Underoath. You guys get my point. So debate that rock is better than gay rap.

I think that's 90% true. I don't really dig metal, but rock, absolutely! Along with punk. It's awesome, rap is so annoying these days. I honestly try to give it a listen because my friend listens to it, but I get so freakin annoyed with it.

I like a little bit of everything and that definitely includes some rock and metal and rap. But I have to admit much of rap or hip hop is tripe. You either have formulaic versions which really don't differ dramatically from each other or you have heavy sampling from other music genres or you have the basic badass gansta horn dog approach whereas frankly a majority of those "artists" are pretty much posers. That's not to say other genres of music aren't guilty of the same, but it seems to me rap is a whole lot of borrowed packaging instead of skill with instruments or voices.

Rap is just a lower grade of hip hop...hip hop tries to talk about things that matter to our society and lives where as rap, or rappers, talk about money, violence, drugs, and women...i'm not saying that i don't like rap, cause i do, but it is definitely not better then any other genre/.....if anything they are profiting from causing violence and causing subjection to women.

That is not the definition of either rap or hip hop. Hiphop is the term to describe the whole genre including The Emcee and the DJ, breakdancing, graffiti, the beat, and even the fashion. Rap is just a term that has been used to describe the music element, in particular the rhymin'.

For the most part, I find rap appalling. Not just the lyrics, but how can people find this...music?
I'm also not too in favor of metal. Classic Rock (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Def Leopard) is good, but I'm not a fan of Metallica, Slipknot, etc.
I find that enjoyable music is opera. Christian hymns. Alternative songs, like Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. Stuff like that.

I agree that most of the lyrics that I have heard in rap/hip hop are not appropriate for kids and offend many, but there is a certain beat with a lot of bass in hip hop that I find gets me going when doing a mundane task, like housework.

I recently listened to music by Colin Hall...he was the lead singer of "Men in Hats"...he has an unbelievable voice. You might like it based on the music you listed you like....You can check him out on youtube. I think my favorite so far has been a song called...oh, my memory is not so hot at the moment, but it has the word freedom in the title...very good. I would say he reminds me of a less perky Jimmy Buffet, but not the same type of music. He has amazing range and pitch.

You personally cannot stand it - fine, but don't label a whole genre that you know little about such as gay or terrible. There is good forms of every style of music just as there are bad ones. Don't limit yourself to just one style of music or you will miss out on some brilliant stuff. Eclectic is the only way to be.

I'm open to most music including rap, rock and metal therefore I cannot rank them. In addition every1 has a different music taste.

Rap is awesome, that's the reason why it was made in the first place. It's hard to rap, so it's more interesting than Rock/Metal. Even some Rock songs include raping you know... And sometimes rap can be easy...

Yo yo was sup
This is da boy singing the debate rap just to top it up
Definitely R-r-r-ap is way...
Better than Rock so just don't sway
and go the Hip hop rap way.

Heh, See how cool rap can be?
Lol

There's also a rapping granny, a rapping rabi, even Homer Simpson did a little once. Rhyming a rap isn't that much different from writing any other song or poem or prose, and rattling off those words in quick succession isn't much different from playing a musical instrument rapidly. So how is 3 guys shouting a rap rhyme more impressive than guitarists playing like the wind and singers belting out a wide range of actual notes?

Rap sucks. Calling it "gay" shows that you suck harder. On your knees.

Heavy metal and Rap are the same: There are a few good groups in each, but they have a higher proportion of junk compared to other genres. They both suck equally.

No. Many of the bands you listed have a punk kid taste. And rap & hip hop, though it is not my style, is not terrible.

I like some of both types of music mentioned. I have always loved rock and metal....since I was a teenager. I've been to many metal concerts and grew up listening to it so metal brings back memories of my teen years. Over the past several years, I have developed some appreciation for certain rap/hip hop music. I like the bass when I'm cleaning or walking the dog...don't know totally what it is, but it just seems to get me going. Mainly, I like eminem and 50 cent, although the lyrics are a bit offensive much of the time, so it isn't something I listen to in my car with the windows down or around my kids, although from what I can tell, some of the stuff they listen to is horrible as far as the lyrics are concerned. At 16, my oldest daughter is not too young, but I would like to hear her listen to more wholesome music. I'm sure my parents thought the same when I was playing the violent femmes...My music taste is all over the place. That's why I voted on this side. Different music appeals to different people. In addition to those mentioned, I like some mainstream country (Taylor Swift for example), classical, alternative, pop among other genres that I don't even know the classification for.

Music taste is generally cultural so your opinions are subjective at best. Most people listen to music they grew up with based on their cultural and/or racial background in general. Crossovers do exist but for the most part you can pretty much guess what anyone listens to especially if they are White, Black, or hispanic. Its funny when there is a popular white rapper, you will find a lot of whites with their CD. If there is a popular black rocker, you will find a lot of Blacks admitting they have the groups CD. For example: The Black rock band, Living Color. Humans are so predictable.

I disagree, at least based on my experience with what I like and don't like. I listen to a bit of everything. Where rap goes, I'm white and I do like Eminem, but I also like 50 cent and some others that I just hear, but forget the name of. I grew up first listening to my parents' music. They were older when they adopted me, so they listened to Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra and...well, I don't even think I remember the rest. I then started to like music that some of my friends liked such as, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Squeeze...etc. As I got a little later in my teenage years, I had to go with my sister on her dates...my duty...lol. She and her boyfriend blasted Metal all of the time. At first, I honestly wanted to jump out of the car, but it grew on me and I found an appreciation for that. Later, I expanded...Jimmy Buffett, The Cure, The Clash, Nirvana...etc. Kind of all over the place. I also like, as I've mentioned some classical. Also, love some Jazz and some Blues. I will listen to almost anything. I find that I may not like some songs or bands at first, but they grow on me. So, while I think that some people might be basing their taste in music on cultural influences, I've just kept an open mind and listen to most music. Oh...almost forgot Ragae...I totally adore Bob Marley. Anyhoo...if I'm not in the majority, at least there are some of us out there who do have an appreciation for all types of music and do keep an open mind. What do you listen to? I'm curious. You didn't really mention your tastes, more just posted on your general philosophy of music and who the listeners are...not that it was a bad post. I am truly curious what music you listen to. I always like new suggestions. Take care...

Neither one is better than the other one. It's all a matter of taste. As a music major, they both offend my senses.
