Rap and Hip Hop is the latest addition to the music. What I believe strongly that these kinds of
genre must be considered as music. These rap and hip hop music are getting popularity day by day and
increasing numbers of bands producing the albums in a regular basis. Few people say that rap is
nothing but the newest addition to the recitation in modern style. But should we ignore the back up
musical arrangements that make those monotonous speeches much more spicy and hit? The entire back up
instrumental arrangement can be judged as music and the lyrics are not; is it a proper
justification? According to my concern, “No” will be answer. The total production which is
called rap or hip hop should be considered as the newest member of the entire music industry. We can
not overlook its escalating popularity. |

According to Webster’s New World Dictionary (2003) music is defined as: “1) the art of combining
tones to form expressive compositions; 2) such compositions; 3) any rhythmic sequence of pleasing
sounds.”
Furthermore, musical is defined in the same publication as, amongst others, “melodious or
harmonious”.
So, at face value at least, rap/hip hop can be considered as music.
Subjectively, it is up to the listener to decide whether a shouty guy with a mic spieling out his
rhymes fulfils the criteria. For me, the key words in the definitions above are “pleasing
sounds” and “melodious or harmonious”. Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. |
