Water keeps plants alive. Plants keep animals alive. Animals keep fast food places in business.

And i'm sure there's some benefits for ponds and lakes too.

Usually true.

Of course it could be acid rain - and that does really exist it's usually a result of coal fired power plants and other emissions. It slowly changes the ecosystem until it's sickly and certain species fail, though it seldom completely kills it to the point of uninhabitable.

I'm thinking of a song right now - "I'm Only Happy When it Rains" by Garbage.

Rain is good for the enviornment, if it's not acidic.
