Put A Kid In Jail, You Breed A Criminal.
I was talking to a young guy from the pub tonight. He was just out Barlinnie(a prison), 10 days for failure to pay a fine. Don't get me wrong, he was always a bit daft, but it was his holiday. His talking point. That thing a wee bit different in his life. He was talking about it like I talk about my week in Majorca. His role models, the people he can relate to he shared a cell with. He still has fines to pay, I bet you he will be back. His peers were almost proud of him.

Specter has a point but it might be more accurate to say they go into prison an amateur criminal and come out a polished and trained criminal. For example, there are a lot of non violent crimes that will land you in prison, but in the joint you learn the cadence of violence and come out much more likely to commit robbery or assault. You make connections with a vast criminal network while there and at the same time it becomes much harder to get a straight job when you get out. Meaning it is that much more likely you will turn to crime to pay the bills. I’m hardly suggesting criminals shouldn’t be punished, I just feel we should approach the subject from the point of view of society’s betterment rather than retribution. Plus our sentencing practices are skewed; you do more time for a pound of weed than you do for rape or robbery. Would you rather live next to a pothead or a rapist?

America may differ, we put bad men in Barlinnie. I think they put this boy there for the "shock" factor, and he came out with role models and a wee bit of street cred.
It may be punishment to you and me, but I grew up with people who got fed better in the jail than they did by their mothers. It is a problem of society we are blessed not to know.
The "shock" factor doesn't work on the hopeless.

First, there is a huge difference between jail and prison.
Jail = term less than year
Prison = term greater than year

If you are sent to prison you have been deemed a criminal. People don't go to prison then become criminals. Criminals go to prison and come out "criminals". I will agree that prison is NOT a rehabilitation clinic. It is a punishment and a person is delusional if they feel these individuals are being rehabilitated.

I've heard bad things about prison. Why would a person want to go back if they could help it? I read a book where a guy got sent to a bad prison with other people who were as bad if not worse and he came out determined never to go back no matter what. He really fixed his life up. It was fictional, but I think it applies to real life; it's not like people like being criminals. The people who commit crimes because they're poor have a bit more of a right...but come on. We have shelters.
