Of course they get too much money, Michael Jordan for example: He made 170,000 dollars a day and
that's really too much. And I agree with the opinion that there are so many other jobs where people
are working very hard and they don't get much money. |

Yes they do for not even having a real job |

I believe that sports today are to us as the collesium was to Rome. A pretty theatrical show to keep
the publics mind of the real problems of the empire/country. And these people are getting paid to
support that idea |

Yes, hard working business people are earning less than men and woman who play sports twice a week. |

One could argue that they have earned it through years of practice and preparation, but the same
goes for anyone in any other profession. The fact of the matter is that athletes are in the
entertainment industry, and they ought not to be paid millions upon millions of dollars for playing
games. |

Professional sports figures make far too much, but sadly we're partly to blame for this. Society is
obsessed with celebrities, be they actors or sports stars, and as such, many people unwittingly fuel
an industry based upon hugely inflated wages. Even starting salaries for rookies are often between
$1 and $4 million per year, while the likes of David Beckham make $1 million per week. A couple of
years ago, Beckham reportedly signed a $250 million contract when he moved to the US.
This is a rather sad state indeed, but sadder still is when celebrities appear in commercials like
those aired by the "Make Poverty History" campaign, snapping their fingers, looking all grim and
calling on people to donate to charities. |

I agree that sports figures make too much money. They are very professional and experts in their
sport, but I do not believe this is enough to earn millions of dollars each year. They really are no
different than the businessman who is a professional and an expert in his job. I believe that it
would be better if sports figures make an average salary like every other hard working professional.
50,000 per year would be a good salary for them. It is crazy to pay someone millions of dollars when
they really do not work full time jobs during the entire year like an average person does. |

I have to say that I agree with this. It is so true. Like people have already said, all famous
people make far too much money and they do less work than someone in a regular day job.
Someone in a regular day job could spend all day working very hard and not get paid much, whereas
sports people, actors and singers make millions even when they aren't doing much.
Footballers, for example, are good at what they do, but do they really need to be paid as much money
as they are receiving? They're earning ridiculous amounts each week, even when they are not training
or playing. It's unfair that some people work harder than famous people and have to struggle with
money issues whereas celebrities can just pick and choose whatever houses or cars they like with the
millions that they have made just from one football match or film! |

I believe that all sports figures, musicians, and actors make far too much money. They really do not
work as hard as a normal person in a normal job. Yes, they contribute to the success of the team,
they draw in crowds and get merchandise sold. However, the little guy who works at McDonalds also
contributes to the success of the team, draws in customers and gets the restaurant's merchandise
sold. It is no different. I strongly believe that sports figures should be paid by the hour. They
might be good at what they do, but they are surely not worth the millions they are paid. $30,000 USD
per year would be plenty for professional athletes. (That would include playing and training). |

Yes, most of them do make far too much, but the same can be said for famous actors, musicians, CEOs
etc. I'm not against them getting it if they can find someone crazy enough to pay them that much,
but I certainly can't say they've earned it or deserve it in any way, shape or form. |

They should make exactly what they make, it is the market that decides..
Get it straight this is not playing and getting a wage, professional sports people are fundamental
to the product that is being sold.
What you are saying ,is similar to suggesting that companies and company share holders should not
get paid as much because all they do is sit on a board..
They are part of the business, they are the stakeholders, get out of the I work the week then get
paid mentality, this is completely different, and players are paid whatever the business can afford
to deliver.. And quite right too .. |

Agreed that they do make a lot of money...but think about what they are doing. They are representing
their country in something. This means there are rules to what they can do as to keep to role model
status. Also the training would be hell...it would be so intense, competitive and vigorous long
hours. Also the heat/cold would be awful. If they didn't work anymore than everyone else why
wouldn't everyone else be doing it for that much money???
If you ask me, it is the singers that cant actually sing that are making far to much money!!! (eg
ashlee/jessica simpson) |

I believe in the free market and believe that professional athletes are paid as much as they should
be paid. But as far as the opening stance, what does that even mean??? What is a 'normal person
who goes to a real job on a daily basis' look like. The average wage in America is about $16 an
hour. Is that how much they should get paid? Is that how much everyone should get paid. Or are
you straight just supporting communism? |

Well I wouldn't want to live in a communist country where some obscure committee decided what people
were worth and how much practitioners of each profession should earn. There's a market system in
place. People earn what someone else will pay them. If someone is willing to pay sports performers
that much, there must be a good reason for it; otherwise they wouldn't do it.
The reason is simple. The performers contribute to the success of the team or otherwise attract
interest to the sports events. Fans buy tickets, merchandise, and watch television shows featuring
their team's games. All of this brings in money. In other words, the performers ultimately bring in
at least as much as they make.
Even if performers were paid poorly, the same amount of money would continue to be made by the
team's owners. How would you feel then if the fat cat owners could lap up all the profits while the
actual performers who made the team what it was were forced to live on a pittance? |
