Private Education Should Be Banned
What do you think, should every child have an equal chance through state education for all, or should those from privileged backgrounds be able to have the choice.

Private schools contribute to class divisions and perpetuate the handing down of privilege through generations. Those who say 'I went to private school and loved it' are missing the point.

I totally agree. It's an unfair system and once again the rich get everything. Life should not be based on money! It should be based on talent.

Private education is detrimental to the whole system. It takes the best resources away from the ones who most need it. For example special needs staff, teachers which could be distributed in a fairer way by the state

Many private schools do flourish, but that is only because they have an advantageous amount of resources than the state schools, and therefore creaming all of the best staff for the wealthy elite, that is no meritocracy.

If all schools were private, the poorer equipped schools would fail and close down, leaving poorer areas without schools as money is the only thing which attracts the private sector.

Yes i do agree with public healthcare, as does most of the UK.

Even in an ideal world, public education is merely centralized propaganda. We need private education to preserve a diversity of viewpoints, as well as the practice of critical thinking for one's self. We also need poets, scientists, musicians, philosophers, novelists, and other "deep" thinkers.

But on the other hand, we need public education as well because we need people who are easily led, as well as a steady supply of refrigeration repairmen, consumers, jocks, soldiers, and line cooks.

This obviously got posted on the wrong side (my bad and no way to fix?).

I don't necessarily believe it should be banned but I do think that more options for not wealthy children should be available. Private schools do have a better curriculum but this is because the teachers are better trained and get paid more. I think if the school systems had more money and the teachers got paid the same as private schools, public schools would be equivalent. Instead, here in America, we pay our athletes and actors/actresses millions of dollars while teachers make pennies. The system is all backwards and I think it is ridiculous that people think this is OK. If that money was invested in public schools, there would not be much difference between the two.

Private schooling should be banned! Every child should get similar schooling so that there is no difference when they get out in the market. Government institutions should be of high standards and made to accommodate every child.
Private schooling creates differences among the students. Students think they are superior and others are inferior. This goes on when they get out in the field and discrimination prevails because of schooling differences.
Reason why they should be banned is that they create class differences. Only people of elite class can afford private institutions. Their behavior and attitude differs in every way from that of the lower or middle class child.
To diminish these differences, private schools should be banned and Government institutions should prevail to make a homogeneous society.

Your first point is remarkably idealistic. Of course we would love the government to ensure education of a high standard, but at the moment that is not plausible.

I don't know how you came to the conclusion that pupils at private schools would feel superior. In case you hadn't noticed, it's the 'posh' children that get beaten up on their way home, and are outnumbered locally five-to-one.

The business of money is an old argument. Have you not heard of scholarships? Besides, many children and teenagers can't be bothered to go to school, so why should their attitude hinder the progress of those that actually want to learn?

Private schooling is unnecessary to an extent. It is just a way to exploit wealth and to insenuate that the persons are better than others in my opinion. I honestly don't see the difference in private or public and i have been through both. Private is just a riskier financial decision is all.

I agree with the fact that parents should be able to choose whether or not their child goes into private schooling and I can totally see where people are coming from, it's just that private schooled children spend a lot of their time not at school - they seem to have more time off than state school children when parents have paid a load of money for them to be there. I do think though that private schools do have better teaching, but if there was just one education system, all children would have the chance to have the same quality and level of teaching and education.

I agree with your point. Private Education should be banned because of the following reasons:

1- If there was one education system, then all students would have equal rights to get the same level of education.

2- The standard of education will also be higher than that of state education.

So, only one education system is better.

 1. Do all students deserve the same right to education?

2. There is no evidence of that. I would argue that the standard of education would decrease, as those who didn't want to learn would make school harder for those that did.

I agree that there should be one education system which is state education system for all poor and rich. If there would be one education system then the private education will not exist. Every child has the equal rights in a state so the state is responsible to give them free education with a standard curriculum so that there would be no discrimination.

My parents sacrificed and did without so my sister and I could have a private school education. It started out because we would have been bused into the city as a result of desegregation and my mother didn't want us on the long bus trip to and from school. After we moved to another state, we just didn't thrive in the public school environment. I graduated from a tiny private school that had been founded by a man who left instructions about class size and who left money to run the school that would keep the tuition affordable. Still, the only students had to be intelligent and willing to work hard. We had an honor system. There were no lockers and no one stole. That would have been grounds for an immediate expulsion. Not one student smoked, drank or did drugs in my entire high school. Believe me, I did know all of them. There were about 9 or 10 students in each grade in the high school. That school gave me a warm environment to grow, learn and succeed. It also gave me a sense of pride that I could be a part of such a loving and nurturing environment. Not all private schools are only for the wealthy or are elitist. There were not too many wealthy students in that school, but there were bright kids with a desire to learn and to work together.

One should have the right to have more education than another. It is freedom of choice. Why should you deprive one of education? The more education, the better. If private education will be banned, then the standard of education should then rise otherwise where will you find the proffesionals in the future? Doctors? Surgeons? Engineers? Lawyers? Teachers? If you are passionate about your education, you should have the right to make it better.

Although I defend the same opportunity for all talented students (and therefore would support grants for poor and yet talented students), I could not agree less on this.

Private schools offer a greater variety to choice, and a quality alternative to the state school system.

I don't see it as "rich" v "poor". I see it as freedom of choice. Many poor kids go to private schools. And unfortunately, some will not have a choice, but that should not exclude others from having the choice.

I am currently attending a catholic coeducational private $10,000 school. Can my mother afford it? NO! It all depends on the sacrifices your parents are willing to make to ensure you receive an education above satisfactory level and to grow in your faith as a catholic. No one should be denied the opportunity to learn more.

How else would kids learn about Christian beliefs from a young age? Besides, a learning environment with Christians in it makes students feel more comfortable (if they are Christians).

I don't think so. Kids who have being born into wealthy families should be able to have that choice, why should we take it away from them? We wouldn't want to be dictated just because some people somewhere don't have the same options. That's like saying we should stop being educated altogether because some poor African children can't be educated.

I think that private schools are good for America. My parents aren't rich, and yet i went to a private school for six years. I liked it for the most part, the only thing i disliked was the uniforms, so no, they should not be banned. Besides, banning them would violate our rights a U.S. Citizens. We have the right to send our children to whichever school we choose, be it private or public.

Just because most of the people can´t take their children on private schools it shouldn't be impossible to everyone.
Parents who don´t earn the same lot of money like others shouldn't expect the others to take their children to classic schools just because their own children have to go to a worse school.

Private schools do offer a better education because people pay for it. Just because a student goes to a private school doesn't mean that they are better than one who attends public school. However, knowing both systems very well, I have to say that I will send my son to private school because with what goes on at the public schools here, where i live, I want him to excel in his studies so that he can explore all of his avenues if and when he decides to go to college.

I do not agree with the idea that private schools should be banned just because they give a better quality of education to children because the fault is not in the private schools but in the state schools and so i think that just because something has been successful it should not be punished but instead it you should ask should state schools begin to construct themselves in a way similar to private schools, i don't agree that paying for your child's education is unfair to those who cant afford to do it, because if your child wants to learn it will we all follow the same curriculum for GCSE's and the same books are available to everyone I went to state primary school and private high school I am now back at a state sixth form my grades have not lessened at sixth form because I am determined and focused. The problem is not with the teachers but with the discipline of the children in my school the rules where simple no make up no dyed hair no religious jewelarry no braids we all had to wear full school uniform which was checked almost daily and bought from the school we had to stay in school for lunch and eat school lunches you got an order mark for bad behaviour three order marks and you was expelled if you wanted to be there you followed the rules if you didn't then break them and leave that way it is up to you in my 5 years there I did not see one fight one instance of bullying no drugs smoking or drinking in school we all had respect for the school and if state schools become that strict then the people who wanted to be in school would prosper because they would not be brought down by those who did not want to be there! My family aren't particularly wealthy neither of my parents went to university my dad works ad a painter and decorator my mum in sales we sacraficed things to send me to that school and it was the best 5 years of my life I have noticed that in my sixth form which is a state school there are less rules there are less rewards for good behaviour I know that as something to do with age but from what my friends of told me it is similar in state high schools the problem is with the ability of state run systems to discipline and punish not with the existence of private schools!!!!

Having only one school system with the government controling what the kids are learning seems a bit communist to me. America n citizens have the opportunity to pick what their child learns. I go to a private Christian high school. My experience here has been a lot better that when i went 2 public school. The Academics are higher, it complies with my moral standards, and i have better relationships with friends and teachers.

My late father was a Headmaster/Educationalist, whose biggest regret was that he supported the then Government when they brought in Comprehensive education in schools, and he helped to set them up. He lived to regret it as he stated it did not uphold or encourage excellence, just brought everyone down to the same level. He recognized this as a form of Communism towards the end of his life. Yes, people MUST have a choice.

Do you even know anything about private education?

Private schools offer scholarships and bursaries to any children who cannot afford to pay but show potential in any area of school life. If anyone wanted to go to private school that badly but did not have the money, then their sheer determination to get a private education would win them a scholarship.

I think to understand this you need to understand the nature of these educational places...
In simple terms: What you are taught in a private school is how to be a leader, they teach you about taking responsibility and individualism and leading teams, that is their function.
Public schools are about producing factory fodder, producing workers, they teach you how to work as a team, in sport, in class and in temperament .. That is their function..

Both are valid as we need workers and we need leaders, and for me the real truth of the matter is that government knows this and uses the system in this way to produce workers and leaders for the future.. Although they would never say that or in fact would deny it, saying there is equal opportunity when realistically there is not..

And perhaps the bit most people wont get is.. That's OK.. It kind of has to be that way for as a society we need both, these 2 different formats produce that..
