There are a couple of debates that make me uncomfortable and this would be one of them. I truly
believe that life is sacred and it is an amazing gift. However, i know that others don't feel that
way, and i don't like imposing my values on others. I have amazing compassion for a family that has
a mentally challenged child, or one that has horrific birth defects. It is something that is more
of a burden than most can really understand (myself included). I also know that the families that
do have these children are very special, and regard life differently. They have a level of
compassion that is far greater than my own. I personally believe that God is more interested in our
spiritual development more than anything else. For this reason i am on this side. That, and i do
believe life is precious. However, you will not find me railing on this subject with any passion. |

Everything happens for a reason. That reason is a lesson for us all. Believe what you want but
there is no justification for killing another human, be it in it's first stages or final. People
actually do learn a lot from a human who is mentally retarded, and no you don't need to train them
or treat them like dogs to see the value in their lives. They are human beings, they have much to
teach the people who cross their paths, even the most inhuman of people. |

A friend of mine married an ex-nun. When the over-40 wife became pregnant, she could not get
amniosentesis because if the fetus was defective, she could not, in good conscience, abort it.
Thankfully for all involved, the baby was normal.
I am a strong supporter of eugenic abortions, if by that you mean aborting genetically deficient
fetuses. Yeah, yeah, I know that Downs syndrome kids and their ilk are loveable and trainable, but
would anyone really choose to carry a child knowing it will be mentally retarded?
Then there is the physically deficient element. Is it really cruelty to terminate the life of a
fetus that will be severely handicapped and probably not even survive to adulthood? I think not.
Too often, taxpayers end up supporting such children in state-run hospitals or homes. The same is
true for idiotic teens who become brain-damaged for life after crashing their motorcycles. |

Eugenic abortion is a good thing...it helps prevent a life of misery for the child born with a
disease and the parents who will have to care for it. |

Well, I wouldn't say the practice is unethical. It helps stamp out genetic diseases and can
ultimately end a lot of suffering before it begins. I think the ethical argument is with the parents
that have to choose if a cleft lip is grounds for an abortion. (This could well make featured debate
Dom :-)) |
