Pirate Downloading Is Illegal And Consumers Should Be Punished For Doing It.
It is a good thing that Governments work with content companies to introduce legislation on pirate downloading.

I agree, piracy is not the way forward. Piracy is a big problem in many countries and as much as you try and stop it, people will still try to sell piracy dvd's and such. Its like drugs, it's illegal but people will still do it. Even if it means taking a big risk.

I agree I just got a letter from the PRS. If I were to even play the radio to myself I would have to pay for a licence as it happens.
If someone writes a piece of music that was played over and over again and yet no-one ever payed for it the art would just die out.

They should be punished because it is the same as theft who is a criminal.

Only if corporations are forced to repay to the creators of works what was ripped off from them.

Last year, the RIAA won a $400million judgment over royalties from radio. Their argument was that musicians weren't getting their royalties.

Guess how much the RIAA and record companies gave to the musicians out of that $400 million?

ZERO DOLLARS.

That's kind of silly, pythagoras.

However, I still disagree on other grounds. What we're seeing now is a wake up call to traditional retailers who are relying on outmoded and unworkable business models. We've already seen in the music industry that as soon as they adopted fee-based online downloads, it was embraced by millions upon millions of people, so much so that everyone wants their own download site so they can get a bigger piece of the pie. The same goes for video downloads, it's bringing in millions, so much so that NBC has set up their own site for downloading all their TV shows. Video-on-demand has taken off on many digital cable services because it gives people what they want at a price they're willing to pay.

Unfortunately, idiots like the RIAA and MPAA think they have the right to dictate how everyone sees and hears media at whatever prices they deem to charge. The fact is that the Internet has revised the paradigm and companies that want to change with it are doing well, those who want to cling to business models from the 70s are failing.

And good riddance to them.
